Sitzmaschine (1905) Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) Jacob & Joseph Kohn (1905-1956)
The Sitzmachine, or Sitting Machine, was designed by the leading viennese designer of the early twentieth century, Josef Hoffman. Every Part of this chair was designed to tell us that it was machine made and that, in fact, we are to regard it as a machine itself. The mechanical impression is achieved through the absence of any historical or traditional decorations. Geometry and the play of lines, curves and planes, solids and voids, appear to govern the form of the chair.
