I'm aware that these are cliche but I was gonna add, more detail to them and I really like these ideas
Choose one: A boy has dreams every night of puzzles he has to solve An alien of a rare species on the run to her younger sister A ghost hunter/horror based YouTuber convinces his roommate to hunt with him. A high school with a drug based gang problem. Four kids with the powers of the elements

Is Apple removing the headphone jack from the iPhone? Nobody really knows, though rumors have swirled for quite a while now. A recent exchange between Nilay Patel and John Gruber returned this debate to the foreground last week. Of course, the truth is t...
Of course, the truth is that it’s very hard to talk about this rumor in the absence of actual information. Any move like this by Apple would be accompanied with a raft of other information, including Apple’s rationale, any new features enabled by the removal, and of course adapters for existing hardware. In the absence of all that, people are able to fill in the blanks with bogeymen or rainbows depending on their point of view.
I have a point of view on all this, but I’m trying very hard not to get mad about something that hasn’t happened. This is a tech unicorn, an unannounced feature on a nonexistent product, and it’s important to keep that in mind.
I don’t normally discuss rumors, but this one has been on my mind a lot lately. It keeps coming back up again and again, and although I keep grimacing and hoping it’s all just much ado about nothing, I can’t help but feel that this is a move that Apple could legitimately make. And that pre-emptively pisses me off to no end.
There are a lot of arguments and rebuttals on both sides of the issue. I am not, in particular, for keeping the headphone jack; I am, however, staunchly against the Lightning becoming the de facto audio port on Apple devices. These are some of my reasons:
1. Lightning is proprietary. Apple owns it. That means that anything that gets built with a Lightning adapter must go through Apple to get its Made For iPhone/iPad/iPod (MFi) seal of approval. Not only does this make Apple the gatekeeper when it comes to Lightning-equipped audio devices with the power, potentially, to approve/deny the certification (and, keep in mind, Apple owns an audio hardware manufacturer of its own, Beats, making every application a competitor), it introduces delay and overhead to existing and future manufacturers.
2. There’s nothing wrong with the headphone jack. The 3.5mm jack is universal. It works on iPhone, Android, Windows machines, Macs, car stereos, TVs, sound systems, projectors - just about anything that handles sound. It’s simple, it’s compact, and easily replaced if needed. I can go from listening to music on my iPhone to my Mac just by unplugging my headphone jack from one and plugging it into the other. Whatever Apple gains by ditching this standard is at the cost of convenience and compatibility to the user. If they want to update the standard, fine - establish another open, compatible, free standard.
3. This isn’t like other times Apple has ‘killed off old technology’. Killing the PS/2 connectors that we used to have for mice and keyboards, parallel ports and printer ports, and all that other stuff to move to USB-only is brought up often to show that Apple ‘knows what it’s doing’ and is frequently ahead of the curve. Same with killing the CD/DVD/Blu-Ray drives in Macs, or killing Mini-Displayport for Thunderbolt. Sure, that’s all fine and good. But again, none of those were Apple-owned standards. This isn’t about going analog to digital. This isn’t about stepping forward into the future and renewing ancient technology. This is about going from free and universal to Apple-owned.
4. Bluetooth sucks. Maybe you don’t agree with me, that’s fine. But in my experience, Bluetooth is a real pain. It causes me problems all the time. Pairing Bluetooth keyboards to my Mac, iPad, or iPhone is usually fraught with frustration. Half the time I pair my DualShock4 to my Mac for gaming, it randomly disconnects without reason or warning, and I end up using it hardwired anyway. I used a pair of Bluetooth headphones that I thought would be great for the gym, only to find them more hassle than they’re worth. Bluetooth is great when it works well and is a frictionless experience. But for me, it so very rarely is.
5. Charging sucks. The sheer amount of devices I have to charge these days is getting out of hand. I get it, I brought it on myself, and this is a first world problem to the max. But: my iPhone, my iPad, laptop, e-cig, Apple Watch, mouse, keyboard, battery pack, Kindle, 3DS... I don’t want to add yet another device to that list, as much as I love the idea of headphones that won’t get tangled up in its own cords. The last thing I need is for my music to die in the middle of a long flight because my headphones ran out of juice.
6. It kills ease of use for my off-cycle products. I just bought a brand-new Retina MacBook Pro and iPad Mini. I get a new iPhone every two years on average, so this would be my year to upgrade. Suddenly, I have to switch to Bluetooth headphones or Lightning headphones? That kills the numerous headphones I own - a pair of Shure studio monitors, Bowers & Wilkins over-ears, and Sennheiser in-ears. And here’s the thing: I like my audio. I spent a hell of a long time finding my ‘perfect fit, perfect sound’ pieces.
Okay, sure, there might be a Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter, but that’s clunky, ugly, and yet another piece of gear I need to make sure I have on hand. On the other hand, if I ‘upgrade’ to Lightning headphones, they’ll be incompatible with my other devices (which are on a much longer upgrade cycle; easily years yet to go); Bluetooth means I’ll have to be fiddling around unpairing and repairing to various devices.
If Apple kills the headphone jack in the next iteration, it’ll be a huge upset for me. In that scenario, my only hope is that the iPhone SE line keeps the 3.5mm jack, since I’m on the fence about ‘downgrading’ anyway to a smaller phone - the iPhone 6 has a great display, but I want something that’s easier to use one-handed without contorting my hands around like an octopus all over the phone while trying not to drop it. But then again, I’m apparently not the norm because I think the iPhone 4 was the perfect size for a phone, and the Nexus 7 for the tablet.
I consume audio a lot. I use my earbuds and headphones when I’m running, marching, at the gym, in the car (or aux-in - but honestly, I often use my headphones because the sound is superior), on airplanes, on long drives, at my computer, and so on. This isn’t something minor that Apple could potentially be changing that may cause temporary inconvenience. This is something huge that could impact their entire ecosystem. I have a really hard time believing that their analyses show that this is the right move to make - unless their profits go up by forcing the Lightning/Bluetooth change by far more than they drop from users ditching the iPhone because of it. And that’s just a real piss-off, whether that’s hard reality or not.
