Gabriel always was acutely aware of his position and what it meant to stand there. When he looked at those under his command, he had to be a strong commanding figure and show no bias. He had to hold himself back from getting too close, and it had been easy. Oh, how it had been easy. He’d held himself above everything anyone tried to tempt him with, even outside of Blackwatch. He’d been able to be kind when it was called for, and able to make Blackwatch a family.
So why it was that one man he picks up off the streets ( out of a damn gang no less ), is the one that tips the balance? Maybe it’s from the beginning the challenge Jesse posed. The amount of work Gabriel had to put in for once to keep him. No one wanted him to sign on a member of Deadlock, but Gabriel had fought for it and got it given to him. He’d spent his time with Jesse, trying to teach and get him to be a real part of Blackwatch. He’d for once taken someone on personally; and that drew a bond.
He tried again and again to shake it off, even if he kept assigning Jesse to missions alongside him when the time where he needed to monitor Jesse had long since slipped by. Rumors were whispered from time to time, but he had to ignore them. It wasn’t like he didn’t see himself slowly going downhill against everything he’d set for himself. All it takes is one wayward person to walk in, one person to care about, to work with, to soon see the smile of, to soon strive to be the reason for the time, to realizing you care far more than you should. It’s a disaster in its own way, but it’s a disaster Gabriel, day by day, was becoming more willing to act upon.
Everything always adds up in his life and comes out in one go, and this night was no different. He’d been up late, surfing the channels for any kind of movie. He’d not been surprised when Jesse joined him, sitting down beside him on the recreational rooms couch. Gabriel had changed it to a western he’d passed earlier, figuring that’d be more Jesse’s style. He didn’t honestly care either way, a movie was a movie. It was a good half hour of silent watching before he noticed Jesse lean onto his shoulder; tired. When Jesse made to move, Gabriel made his own move. No filter left in his tired mind to stop him, the moment Jesse started to pull back up, Gabriel leaned over, one hand moving Jesse’s face to face his.
In a moment Gabriel’s lips were placed against Jesse’s. The years that he’d kept it hidden away, from even himself, came out. For the first time he did what he’d wanted to for so long; he pulled Jesse as close as their positions would let him. It had been some time since he’d last kissed someone with any form of emotion, and it sent sparks through his mind to have that kind of contact again and really mean it. He let himself linger, not willing to pull himself away. The sensation was something he’d wanted for so long, and if this was the one and only shot at it, he wasn’t going to prematurely let it go. He wanted a good memory of it.
When he finally pulled back, he remained hovering inches away from Jesse’s face, his eyes searching for any response in Jesse’s. God, when was the last time Gabriel Reyes ever felt nerves? It had been too long since he took a risk that meant something to him.
❛ Tell me I didn’t just fuck everything up. Tell me you’d let me do it again. ❜
