“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style” – Maya Angelou
This quote sums up the most amazing book I recently read (and a quote I live by).
I’m not one to usually post about books, but this book had such a positive impact on me that I had to post about it.
Yesterday, on #SelfcareSunday (26 August), I finished reading @slayinyourlane by @yomiadegoke and @lizuvie. I loved it!!!
Even though I’m not a black girl, as an active #IntersectionalFeminist, I found this book a transformational and incredible read! It has changed my life for the better, and I needed to read this book at this time in my life. I think everyone who’s a true champion of equity for *all (over the age of 14) must read this, especially those from all BAME and marginalised communities (men and women).
After reading this book, I am always going to (as suggested within it) “… Listen, learn, and unlearn…” much more; and I feel like I can become a better ally to *all marginalised groups.
I love the fact that this book highlighted #Intersectionality, #disability, financial independence, and #SelfCare too (topics I care deeply about), as well as that it featured stories by some of my favourite women including Karen Blackett, June Sarpong, and Afua Hirsch! These two quotes on self-care are especially good, and they couldn’t have come in a more significant time in my life as I am trying to cut out the noise: trying cut out the noise “… This too shall pass…” and “… Take yourself away from surroundings that make you stressed…”
Also, I know my option is not worth much, but I cannot highly recommend #SlayInYourLane enough. FIVE STARS *****.
THANK YOU (and congratulations), Yomi and Elizabeth, on writing (and publishing) a magnificent book that I wish you wrote and released your book at least eight years ago.
Look forward to collaborating further as well. Together, we will make a more equitable, inclusive world for everyone and support each other to thrive not merely survive in lives.
As one of my favourite quotes from the book goes: “… Let’s live our best lives, and do so without jeopardising our health…”
