#turns out #talking to my 21 y/o manager’s old manager #he came to our store as part of a deal #for her to get rid of him #so I’m annoyed #that when i asked for career progression paths my regional manager said i have to start #working at one of the smaller #stores first before working as assistant manager here #when the dude they picked to be our store manager #was the guy another store was trying to get rid of #so ofc i’ll be looking for a new job #i’m don’t wanna waster anymore time with this stupid company #that’s full of people who don’t know what the fuck they’re doing #even those higher in the work hierarchy

#i feel like i’m carrying this big burden that shouldn’t really be mine to bear #and now… with every decision i make and move towards in life #i’m always coming back to this one thing and it’s so frustrating to feel like it’ll always circle back to this #and it’s like … had everyone just left me alone things would be golden #but no like this is going to keep happening to me and i just feel very messed up about it now #so this week i know i’m not going to be ok #but that needs to be ok #cos the last time things were not ok this big thing happened #and even to this day i question how much it has actually fucked up my life

keep thinking about how I wrote in my dissertation about how every time a new form of public/social space emerges it's immediately popular with kids and teenagers who see it as a chance at freedom and then adults colonise it and kick them out. this happened with malls in the 80s and diners in the 50s and pool halls in the 20s. my dad was doing research on this trend in like 1975. and I was like "yeah so this is going to happen to the internet" and then five years later every government suddenly decided to ban kids from everywhere online. I hate being right especially when I don't even get paid for it

I think more people would benefit from my dad’s go to advice: “show up, and pay attention”

Work, friendships, relationships, etc. — all of them will be improved if you just show up and pay attention.

Show up: follow through on commitments, be present rather than distracted, keep your word

Pay attention: take notes, listen when people talk, do what you need to do to remember tasks you’ve been given, READ YOUR DAMN EMAILS

And before tumblr tumblrs, I also have undiagnosed ADHD and probably autism and “just” showing up and paying attention often takes a bit of extra effort for me. But I’m also the most recent addition to my team at work and also somehow the only one who is both on top of my shit and still only giving like 60%-70%.

I do have one warning though: once you start showing up and paying attention, you will be frustrated by how many people aren’t doing that. But hey, your boss will love you and you might even get a raise out of it.
