Warren had been hanging around in a room in the building for the New Genesis council when he heard a panic in the hallways.
He got to his feet, alongside everyone else, and ran out into the hall. There were a bunch of officials and bodyguards and just normal workers running away from the meeting hall.
“What’s going on? Is it demons?” Warren had to press himself to the wall as people shoved past him. “Hey!” He grabbed someone by the arm and they tried to squirm away. “What’s going on?”
“Monster!” They screamed and Warren released his grip and they bolted out.
There was a loud bang from the direction of the meeting room, causing people to scream and the crowd to grow more frantic and shove past faster. Warren took a deep breath and started to shove his way through the crowd towards the meeting hall. John was in there, and he knew that monster either meant he was fighting the monster, or John was the monster.
Luckily the crowd thinned and Warren was able to run down the rest of the hallway to make it to the doors of the meeting hall. He fumbled with the door knobs for a moment and flung them open.
John was in the middle of the meeting hall, on his knees, growing uncontrollably. Many chairs and tables were splintered around his legs, and his arms were braced against the ceiling, already cracking and splintering under the pressure. He was rapidly running out of room.
“John!” Warren had to scramble over upturned tables and chairs to get close.
“Warren?!” His voice rumbled through the room, unmuffled by his helmet, and his head snapped to his position. “You’ve got to get out of here!”
“I’m not going anywhere!” Warren stumbled over the loose rug and fell. Luckily he just had a few steps and then he landed against John’s knee. “What happened? Are you hurt?”
He didn’t respond, just moved his legs a bit to make room for Warren to stand without risk of being squished. Warren stumbled a bit and small chunks of plaster started to rain down.
Looking straight up, he saw John hunched over. His armored hands were braced against the far wall now, his head bowed, his shoulders pressing into the ceiling. Through his visor, Warren could see the strain on his boyfriend’s face. His eyes were screwed shut.
“Please get out of here.” He pleaded before he grunted in pain. The wall crumbled as one hand went right through it. Warren stumbled back as John hunched down lower. He heard more furniture breaking with a terrible noise. “I can’t- I can’t stop it.”
“I’m not going anywhere.” Warren bit back a yelp as massive hands planted on either side of him and John had to curl up more. He was in a loose fetal position, and by the cracking noises and destroyed light fixtures, his back was pressed against the ceiling. Warren had to fall to a seat as John ducked his head down. “Hey, it’s gonna be okay. Open your eyes. Look at me.”
His eyes opened. Warren could hear his labored breathing.
“Breathe in with me.” Warren took an exaggerated breath in, and he heard a stutter before John followed suit. “And breathe out.”
The massive man copied Warren’s breath out.
“Good.” Warren scooted over to one of his hands and put his arm around John’s wrist. “It’s going to be alright. Just breathe with me. In-”
A soft cry of pain accompanied with a red crackle of energy shot through John’s entire body, and Warren found himself tossed haphazardly into the middle of John’s fetal position.
He had a little bit of room, at least. In front of him, he saw John’s head against the floor, his arms curled around his head and blocking out the little remaining external light. His chest expanded and contracted over Warren’s head.
“Breathe with me. In-” Warren took a big breath in and John followed suit, “and out.”
He instructed John through some breathing exercises for a moment before he finally started to calm a little bit.
“Do you think something triggered your powers?” Warren gently put a hand on the exposed bit of bicep near him.
“I dunno. Someone was talking, but my ears started ringing and then this happened.”
“It’s going to be okay.” Warren patted his arm. “We’ll both get out of here alright.”
John grumbled softly about how Warren should have just ran when he had the chance.
“I love you too.”
