The Skaftö wreck
The wreck of the Skaftö off Lysekil, north of Gothenburg, discovered in 2003, dates from the late 1430s and probably sank around 1440.
A reconstruction of the Skaftö as it might have looked. She seemed to have been a carrack.(x)
Not much remains of the ship itself, but the cargo does, and that is particularly interesting because it provides an insight into the trade routes of the 15th century in northern Europe.
Photo of the wreck and copper ingots. (x)
She was carrying copper, oak timber, quicklime, tar, and bricks and roof tiles, which were produced in various corners of Europe. With these analyses, the researchers have been able to establish that the copper was mined in two areas in what is currently Slovakia, for example.
Another view on the copper ignots (x)
The analyses also show that the bricks, timber and probably also the tar originated in Poland, while the quicklime is apparently from Gotland. Presumably this was also her starting point, she sailed from Gotland, and was probably on her way to Gdansk in Poland and then on to Bruges in Belgium. In the 15th century, this city was a major trading hub, from where copper was transported to Venice, for example. The research is therefore still ongoing, even though it already provides a great insight into the trade of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.
