Review: Skaters- Manhattan

NYC four-piece Skaters unfortunately seemed to go fairly unnoticed in the music scene for a while, that is until the release of their fantastic single I Wanna Dance (But I Don’t Know How) in early 2013. This frantic, exciting anthem grabbed the attention of a host of music lovers, and the band soon toured with the likes of Deap Vally and Palma Violets, as well playing their own headline shows and festival slots.

Now we can finally get our hands on their debut album Manhattan, an inventive, hectic album that tells stories of life in the Big Apple.

From the first track, One Of Us, you can tell that this album is going to be a great one. The stomping drum beats and chorus of “Fun and games, fun and games” let you know that you’re in for an album that’s full of fun, exciting songs to soundtrack this year.

Each track is distinguishable from the next even on the first listen. There’s plenty of loud and energetic numbers, including the ground breaking I Wanna Dance…, and Nice Hat, but there are calmer moments of the album too, in Band Breaker and Fear Of The Knife. These provide a bit of a breather whilst still being fantastically dance-worthy.

Manhattan is a brilliant, innovative debut, and bound to get this band a whole lot more attention in the future.
