She's like a note taker or something; stenographer I think is the word. She sometimes does doodles or like, drawings in the corner of stuff. He probably saw a drawing of himself "HMN... I LIKE THAT ANGLE."
I'm imagining the premise poppy wrote for Mal where the sea glass is is there while hes interrogating or torturing killing etc.
Then he looks over and realizes she was there the whole time and has taken full notes just absentmindedly
