— IT’S ALWAYS DARKEST BEFORE IT GOES TOTALLY BLACK.
You were never one of the “cool kids” in high school, so now you sell them pot behind your job, and they pretend to like you. Sometimes it makes you feel like you’re one of them, and sometimes, though you might not admit it to yourself, that feels good. You’ll smoke with them outside by dumpster, not a care in the world, leaving the snack bar you’re supposed to be in charge of to the rookie employees that are constantly almost burning the place down. You like to think almost is the operative word there. They’ve only started a few small fires so far. Pretty good.
It was supposed to be a summer job, working at the roller rink, but now it’s kind of a career. You shudder at that thought– this as your career. You’re hoping one day the old man who owns the place will just promote you to manager so that you can seem like you have your life together… At least… a little bit. But you’re not holding your breath. He never seemed to like you much. Not many people do. You’re kind of an acquired taste. You’re always telling yourself you’re going to get another job, but you never do. You earn most of your money on the side, anyway; the rink is a great place to stash, and move your product.
If you weren’t so socially awkward, maybe your mom wouldn’t be your best friend. She pretends she can’t smell the herb on you, and you pretend that she didn’t drink a whole box of wine today. You guys watch the Bachelor together on Monday nights. Life’s okay.
