Hey, I was going to ask a question! I have a 2 year old male black domestic cat. His name is Greg and he’s a sweetheart! Only thing, he loves licking. To an excessive degree; every time he comes to cuddle he’s licking my face or hands or anything. Is there any reason for that that you know of? Love your blog! Thanks!

Hello to you and Greg!  Grooming is a HUGE part of cat life--- we’re talking like 20-50% of their waking hours are spent grooming.  When you look at it that way, it shouldn’t be a surprise that it’s part of their socializing too.

Grooming is just what cats do in their downtime.  They groom each other to reinforce bonds (but generally only existing bonds; from my own observations of cat colonies, outsider cats generally aren’t groomed by current colony members until they’re accepted.  Also, the cats who share resources nicely are more likely to groom each other).   Cats also usually groom places that are difficult to reach on other cats---- like the top of the heads, sides of the cheeks, and under the chin.  You’ll notice that these spots on a cat are also FULL of feline facial pheromones (ffp).  This helps distribute the smell around the colony, making sure all the members recognize each other as part of the same group. 

Grooming releases serotonin and other Feel Good chemicals.  It relaxes kitties.  By grooming you, Greg is trying to make sure you feel like you’re part of the colony.  He sees you ‘grooming’ him by petting his cheeks and head---- he wants to return the favor c:

I love how you're a strong vegan but you don't act like you're superior to people who eat meat, and you focus on trying to convert others to veganism instead of putting them down. It's really enlightening. :)

Hey thanks very much, I really appreciate your comment. I try to be as neutral as I can, of course I'm human and have my bad days where I just loose my patience, but you guys can always point me out when I'm being preachy. I just feel that people deserve patience, I didn't born as a vegan, so I know it is a process, but of course I cannot help losing my mind with trolls.
