ARTIST INTERVIEW: ANDY MONK
ARTIST INTERVIEW: ANDY MONK
How do you think growing up in Australia has affected your art?
Australia has a beautiful landscape and it has always fuelled my imagination for fantasy. Also the aboriginal culture here talks of the Dreamtime, it's a rich mythology, a place with no time. Whilst my work is not directly from that mythology, it inspires my own alternate universe. I dream of strange creatures on the borders of reality that would dwell here too.
How would you define "Cryptocreastic Whispers"?
This was a rebirth of my graphite and detailed pencil work which I had not done for some time. I had just gone through a hard time in my life, this was my subconscious mind venting itself and channelling new muses. Allowing my mind to run loose.
What kind of illustration projects do you look forward to taking on?
I love doing creature work and anything that has a mythical feel. Things that evoke other worlds, the richness of life we take for granted.
Do you see yourself in any of your characters?
Definitely, they are all aspects of myself and human beings.
Do these characters appear elsewhere in your art?
The eye is a repetitive symbol for me through a lot of my art. It represents 'seeing' the truth, behind the veil and illusion of the world we live in. Seeing below the surface.
What does your art process entail?
It usually begins as a mental picture which I will pencil sketch, maybe a few iterations of an idea or I will rework the one drawing, almost like sculpting til it starts to emerge, sometimes I'm surprised what comes out. It will either then become a pencil drawing, a painting or a sculpture. I sometimes will do a rough sculpt of the idea to use as lighting reference for the drawing and painting.
Do you have an image in mind before you begin?
A lot of the time I have some picture, even if it is a very vague picture. I feel like a radio receiver sometimes, like I’m picking up a vague signal and through drawing I make that signal strong and clear.
What are your inspirations?
Music is massive for me, I listen to a lot of avante guarde, world and metal music. It evokes emotions. I also have started meditating and exploring other realms again in my life, I see things there that I bring back.
All other art forms inspire me and being in natural environments quietens my mind to hear the voice of the muse.
What materials couldn't you live without?
A pencil, kneadable eraser and paper!!!
I hope my sketchbook…
Is exciting and interesting for people to look at. I hope it evokes a childlike wonder, maybe with a slight mixture of uneasiness :).
