My piece from this morning’s sketchride. My office has moved to this nostalgically rustic neighborhood. Glad I finally got to sketch this place. ———————————— First sketch ride of the year for our small group of Urban Sketchriders SG, at Joo Chiat area. We didn’t ride as long as outing, but the ride is not the point today, but slow, relaxed exploration and sketching, are. And we had @elyssaart Sangmi joining us for the first time today! 🤗 Wonderful weather, amazing food, awesome sketch locations, great conversations and the best company. What more can one ask for? Corporations have funds, marketing, time, and human resources that communal projects cannot muster.

"Open Source" Projects are interested in creating a competitor to Slack, because they're also funded by corporations who want to appeal to other corporations, they do not give a shit about community building.

Discord and platforms like it will put a lot of time into seeming like a natural progression when in reality it was but 4 years ago(discord is 8 years old) i made fun of their social media manager on their reddit ad they placed because they wanted people to use their platform but didn't actually say why it was better.

Its actually frustrating to me to watch other programmers recommend Matrix for reason 2, Matrix requires a high degree of intent for community building because each chat room has its own set of moderators and the only 'grouping' ability can add any single chatroom without moderator consent. I could go on why this is but I think I'll leave it as 'their search sucks'.

Old folgies recommend we go back to Mumble/Teamspeak/Ventrilio (im going to collectively refer to them as 'Voice Chat Platforms") but frankly those were 'tools' not community building platforms. Voice Chat Platforms are honestly similar to Discord in that they were low effort to create unorganized chat but allowed you to put more effort if you wanted more control. However creating Voice Chat Platforms required either a monetary investment (which left you at the mercy of hosts) or the ability and capability to host your own (which most people cannot and can be a drain on some home internets). Ultimately these platforms were to facilatate video game communities that existed on another platforms and their suitability for managing an actual community was close to nil.

(Theres a reason we had a Skype chat and did a bunch of steam DMs for FTFO's mumble).

I wrote this up this morning and never posted it so i don't remember where i was going with this but like, don't inheritly trust discord to be good people.
