2am and I'm reading scientific papers about sea sponges instead of sleeping 🦠✨
listen. I have a problem. I can't just use a skincare product without knowing EXACTLY how it works.
so there I was, 2am, supposed to be asleep, instead reading about spongilla spicules and biological silicification.
and honestly? it's fucking fascinating.
what I learned (explained simply because I'm not a scientist):
freshwater sponges naturally grow these tiny glass-like needles as their skeleton. they're 200-320 microns long. that's MICROSCOPIC. you can't see them but they're doing work.
when you put them on your skin, two things happen at the same time:
🌊 physical action: they create tiny channels so your serums can actually get in there instead of sitting on top doing nothing
🧬 biological action: your skin senses the micro-stimulation and goes "oh shit I need to repair this" and starts producing more collagen and renewing itself faster
it's literally triggering your skin's built-in repair mode. like hacking your own biology but in a good way.
the 99% vs everything else thing:
apparently there's a massive quality difference between grades. the 99% top grade (what high-end places use) has a broken needle rate of only 6-10%.
the lower grades? way more broken needles = skin irritation instead of results.
also the 99% is pure white and the lower grades are gray-brown. if you're paying premium prices for a gray product, you're being scammed lol.
