After seeing Jungle Cruise yesterday I have thoughts about Frank realising that homosexuality was still illegal in the UK in 1916 (spoilers under the cut)
So, Frank has kept up with affairs in London (from the newspaper clippings) but I don’t think there would have been a lot of detail in that.
Homosexuality was decriminalised much earlier in large parts of South America than in England (somewhere around 1830 I think, whereas it was in the 1960s for England?) so I don’t know if Frank actually knows that it is still illegal in the UK? If he’s only seen the Amazon for so many years, he will have seen it decriminalised there and probably assumed that it occured elsewhere too. Hence why he was so chill when MacGregor came out to him and maybe even why MacGregor felt safe enough to come out at all (besides that he trusted Frank and he was still obviously nervous - I don’t think he would ever have told anyone in England as it was an arrestable offence)
Which gets me thinking - what about their return to England? Is Frank horrified to learn that when MacGregor said he could be “ostracised from society”, he really meant it? Frank would be devastated to find that MacGregor has to hide who he is, especially when Frank loves him for that.
I have a headcanon that they’re at some sort of high society party and MacGregor is seriously heart-eyed for some witty Oscar Wilde type gent and Frank (too loudly) announces that MacGregor should ask him to dance and MacGregor just fucking PANICS. Like full on drags Frank to the side and asks him what the devil he’s playing at, saying things like that aloud, he’s going to get him arrested and that’s the moment that Frank realises MacGregor can never openly love anyone like Frank can love Lily and it just breaks his heart.
(cue Frank using his size and strength to defend MacGregor from people who threaten to out him, glaring at onlookers menacingly so MacGregor can have a dance in a ballroom with a dashing gent, Sherlock Holmes 2 style)
The just radiate comfort
Grunkle Stan vs Skipper Frank - Not What He Seems
I don’t if anyone else made this comparison, but from the moment the first Jungle Cruise trailer dropped I joked that Skipper Frank Wolff is basically a live-action Grunkle Stan. He runs a cheap tourist trap, he’s a never ending fountain of bad puns & dad jokes, and he seems very interested in money. I was mostly joking about calling Frank “Skipper Stan,” but I still went into the movie theater with a mental Grunkle Stan Bingo sheet to keep myself amused in case the story sucked. And while Frank turned out to tick off a LOT more Stan-isms than I initially predicted, including having one of Stan’s signature lines as his first or second line of dialogue in the movie, there is one major difference I want to highlight.
Frank is not greedy or a wealth-Hunter.
For those unfamiliar with Gravity Falls, Grunkle Stan is initially shown to be the greedy business owner archetype made popular by characters like Mr. Krabs. However, the show eventually reveals that a lot of Stan’s greed comes from some deeply rooted issues of self-worth instilled by his abusive & emotionally distant father. And while Stan’s desires for wealth could get a little out-of-hand, he never let his greed come before more important things like his family or the people he cares for.
Frank, on the other hand, doesn’t have any genuine interest in being wealthy. Not to get too deep into spoilers, but Frank has reached a point in his life where he recognizes that wealth & material worth aren’t important in the long run. However, Frank recognizes that while HE doesn’t see the importance of money anymore, almost everyone else he’ll interact with puts a lot of emphasis on wealth. He plays the greedy sailor to discourage wannabe adventurers from chartering a boat for exploring the Amazon, and poses as the sketchy tour guide who will accept bribes to get his passengers to port safely by cutting their sightseeing expeditions short.
I’d love to go more into their similarities, but to do so would be diving into some MAJOR spoilers for both Gravity Falls and The Jungle Cruise. But I will say if you’re a fan of one, you’ll probably enjoy the other.
Jungle Cruise (2021)
“When I first met Jaume, I asked him, ‘What do you feel this movie’s about?’ I always ask a filmmaker that before I’m about to sign on because I wanna know what it’s all about. And he said, ‘You know, it’s about love.’“
