“my interests happily lie… elsewhere.”
Something I noticed that at the end, the outfits that Lily and Frank are wearing are the same ones that were on the magazine cover in Frank’s cabin
Oh my god I am going to cry
This is such a sweet detail!
They shared the same dream. Frank wanted to feel like an Earl, dressed like a fancy gentleman walking around London and so. did. Lily.
what if Lily knew the magazine. she seemed kinda pleased to see it so what if she had at one point looked at the same cover and wished she could dress like that, so when they returned to london they fulfilled their shared dream of dressing up like this image to walk around London?
Or! what if they didn’t know the other had that same thought? what if they got these suits independently from one another and showed up like this, having this insane connection to each other that they only just then realised they have?
For all the discourse and sordid history of feminine clothes in period fiction or period-inspired fantasy and action stories– from endless misconceptions about corsets to the backlash where people will now complain if a female character has anything negative to say about skirts– I'm still starved for a character that crossdresses because she actually likes the way men's clothes look.
Like. In basically all the cases I've seen over the years, the reasons given for the characters' distate for feminine fashion are purely practical. "Corsets are restrictive, you can't move freely in skirts, feminine fashion is all form no function!"
And while writers often get it wrong and exaggerate how uncomfortable these clothes really were to a sometimes comical degree– you know what? Sometimes it's true! Cycling in a skirt is hard and inconvenient which is why victorian women started wearing split skirts or cycling breeches. (Which was hugely controversial to the men of the time) But like... that was, in fact, feminine fashion. Female cyclists weren't dressing like men they were just wearing a new kind of women's fashion.
Indeed, none of these characters seem to actually like masculine clothes, they give the impression that what they really want to wear is... modern women's fashion. (Which is why this kind of writing often feels anachronistic)
More than that, there is the underlying assumption that while historical women's fashion is governed by aesthetic, men's fashion is governed by use. Caring about how you look is a silly girl thing, unlike rational men who only care whether something works! Which is just... complete horse shit. Men care a lot about how they look, always have, and most masculine fashion trends cannot be explained by practicality any more than women's fashion can. It's a complete lie, based in misogynistic gender roles, that I wish wasn't repeated by media trying to be feminist. (Especially since these heroines always just happen to still be conventionally attractive– and, surprise, feminine– because everyone wants a woman who doesn't care if she's beautiful, but no one wants a woman who... actually isn't beautiful.)
If you talk to any real life butch, they love the way masculinity looks. They think they look hot! They think other butches look hot! There is a real love for masculine style there, that's just completely fucking... absent in most fiction. Because caring about your appearance a feminine trait, duh 🙄
There's an article I love in dressing dykes about Anne Lister, a real life historcial butch. And the way she incorporated masculine fashion didn't involve pants at all. It was in things like leather straps on her umbrella (customary only for gentlemen at the time) wearing men's braces, and dressing entirely in black as was fashionable for menswear but not womenswear. All of these are stylistic decisions. She did it because she liked masculinity.
If all your medieval-inspired fantasy heroine wants is practicality she'd probably start by mimicking the style of working class women. Because you know. Women worked. Women have always worked. And so they had to wear clothes suited for manual labour. There's a lot of interesting things you can do with class there, and she probably will be accused of being 'unladylike' by her environment anyway! But if she's gonna wear men's clothes, please consider letting her like them.
I'm just want an actual goddamn butch main character (or even a genuinely masc straight girl) and I'm tired of repeating the myth that men's clothes are these neutral canvasses of practical use with zero elements of style. (I have eyes! I can see that that's untrue!) Or that it's preposterous that a woman might... genuinely like these stylistic elements. That she might want to look like a man.
@alexbrooks-max-05 the sequel has been greenlit and there's been no news of a cancellation
but there is also currently a strike going on that prevents them from working on it
not sure why my post led you to believe there wouldn't be a sequel?
personally I feel like Jungle Cruise being a movie led by a black polynesian man and directly addressing colonialism and subverting the "savage Natives" trope has been really overlooked. and I don't think they necessarily did the best job or should be hailed as a perfect unproblematic masterpiece, but in a genre that is so famously white and anti-Native they made an effort to do better and not perpetuate all this shit. they showed that it's possible to make an adventure movie that actively goes against these problems and can still be as fun and successful. for a company that shapes the current media landscape and taste, it is important that disney makes choices like this and doesn't continue in apathy, ignoring the ways media can do harm. it deserves acknowledging that they made a good choice.
So now with a new Disney film coming out with a "first gay" character, those lists are doing the rounds again and it makes me so irritated seeing McGregor on there. Like yeah, in Beauty & the Beast or Cruella or Onward they were not fleahed out, throw away gay characters, but MacGregor is a Main Character! Who is fleshed out and fully part of the story and he and his relationship with Lily drives it in many parts, and his being gay is actually part of his character rather than just hinted at and argh! People keep writing him off as "ooh, another 1st gay!" But he actually was! And you bet its mostly people whove never seen the film just reacting to the bad faith takes some people put online
A large reason I ended up making this blog (aside from I was hype for the movie even just based on the trailer) is because I knew this would happen and I wanted to create a space where people who actually saw themselves in the character could express how the character and movie as a whole make them happy and they could find positive posts and not be constantly reminded of all the bad faith takes. I don't talk about these bad faith takes a lot for this reason (I have some posts tagged #representation compilation where I discuss all of this) but I whole-heartedly agree with you anon.
a lot of people, me included, were really touched by MacGregor's coming out, saw themselves in his struggles, appreciated what a well-rounded character he is, and I suspect many more people would feel the same if they gave the movie a chance. But unfortunately "disney's 200th first gay character" jokes get more likes so they overshadowed any good feeling anyone might have been having. and I got messages from people who were absolutely crushed by this too. it feels like people are mocking them for seeing themselves in it, shaming them for liking a gay character that was arbitrarily deemed bad by people who never even saw the movie. (there is also a larger conversation to be had about the sense of moral superiority derived from deeming certain portrayals of a minority "bad" and shaming others for enjoying them in an attempt to appear more enlightened when in reality none of this really matters and personal enjoyment of media is not indicative of someone's morality or ability to treat people well and respectfully irl, whereas publicly shaming and mocking people constantly is kinda indicative of a failure on both accounts)
the opinions "we shouldn't have to beg for representation from huge media companies that only care about us when they can profit off us and instead support struggling queer artists' work more" and "a gay character from a huge media company can be someone queer people see themselves in and like watching" can coexist. feeling the second doesn't automatically make someone a bootlicker and thinking the first doesn't mean enjoying an enjoyable thing once in a while makes you a hypocrite.
It’s missing Frank, Lily, MacGregor, and Proxima hours
joke's on you hater, they already got a sequel confirmed ages ago 😜✌️
im gonna be real, i forgot i was following you (and that this blog existed)
i got so happy to see you pop back up on my dash, tho :)
Hey, that's alright, I don't really do much on this blog these days. I appreciate the message tho, thank you!
Hi, I was wondering if you had a gifset of Frank and the Houghtons being soft with each other (like Frank gently steering Macgregor off the boat by the arm, etc) Ive been looking through your tags and I cant find it but Im sure Ive seen it before. Thanks!
hi, I don't think I ever made a gifset with that specific theme, and the only time I can remember gifing that scene is in this one
it's possible someone else made the gifset you're thinking of
JUNGLECRUISECORE?!?!?
what do we call the aesthetic that’s like….. the jungle cruise at disney world
im talking that old ass adventuring in the jungle with a machete in all khaki and being narrated by an old radio announcer aesthetic
I haven't found a -core specifically for this aesthetic, but "vintage explorer aesthetic" is a term I've narrowed it down to
If I organised a gift exchange on AO3 for Jungle Cruise, would anybody sign up?
I’m thinking to make it in commemoration of the film’s one-year anniversary at the end of July, which would give us two months to get the word out, get prompts assigned to everyone, then get writing. I am open to input regarding parameters aside from the due date, like minimum word count, request rules, and so forth. Any thoughts, anyone?
Happy pride month to the best "first" gay Disney character!
I'll allow this joke, once. Happy Pride!
