I don't know how familiar you are with toads... but I was wondering, I have an American toad and this is our first winter. Will he hibernate in captivity? And how do I know he's doing this and not just sick, etc.
He should not! They rely on environmental triggers (temperature, humidity) to estivate or brumate.
However, if you choose to trigger brumation you would lower the temperature and offer food less often and eventually not at all. However, you still keep the humidity within a proper range and the water dish full of fresh, clean water. Your toad should stop eating eventually and probably bury themselves in the substrate.
