SKUGGSJÁ CRACOW 2019
Hi! First of all, cool blog! Also, I'm interested about Skuggsja, do you have any information about it? Like which manuscript it is from, and what is the oldest existing design of it? Thanks a lot!
Skuggsjá : The Looking Glass
“… siðan skaltu taka stafinn og gata í miðjan hann, og muntu þá sjá um allan heim ef þú vilt.”
“… then take the stave and look into the centre of it, and you will see all over the world if you so wish.”
The somewhat morbid spell includes calfskin, raven’s eye water, a water rail feather, myrrh and warm spring water. The result is to “see all over the world”, which is a little like Heimdallr in Norse Mythology having keen sight and more so of Hliðskjálf, the throne of Norse god Odin from where he can see over all the worlds.
The stave itself is seen in several manuscripts in various dimensions. Lbs 4375 has written in its opening that it has been copied from a manuscript dated 1676 AD. The version in Galdraskræða has been significantly embellished with many circles and other additions, which while making it look more impressive is unlikely to be how the original was drawn. My presentation of them are as they appear in their manuscripts but with filters applied to white out the background and black retraced over every line to repair often scratchy illegible detail (it took many hours to complete).
This is the only stave to feature hands (within the middle square). Actually few staves have clear representations of anything tangible, one other being the Heilabú or Þórs-Auga (Thor’s Eye) which features an oddly drawn head.
Write to me should you want more.
