Hi! I was wondering if you had any idea what this bone is/what animal it came from? Its pretty fragile and about three inches long, it was found near a beach in Washington if that helps at all!

Hi there! You found yourself a partial opossum skull! This is the back end of the skull—the brain case with that massive sagittal crest which is one the the easiest ways to ID opossum skulls—and the zygomatic process of the temporal bone. Here's a complete one for reference (large adult with a small juvenile). Fun find!

Anyone wanna solve a final riddle for me? I got this skull in a bucket of random, mostly shittily bleached bones for free a couple years ago. I'm about 98% sure this guy is just a dog, but he does look awfully wolfy with that nose bridge slope in between a dog and yote, so if someone could confirm if he is or isn't that would be awesome. I've got him here compared to a confirmed (large eastern male) coyote and shepherd-type dog, cleaned by myself.

When it comes to identifying skulls the more you do it, the easier it gets.

I recommend this book to every bone enthusiast because it still can be very difficult if you’re relying on the internet. If you don’t get the book just assume it’s a raccoon 😂

check for it on amazon or eBay, try to find it used! It’s much cheaper 🙂

Anyone good at skull identification? I want to know what that weird one on the right is- the owners of the antique store didn’t know. 🤔

I don't know what this is but I know it ain't a coyote!! Anyone want to tell me? Very stink taxidermy leftover at the local antique mall. I kinda want to buy it just to clean it properly. A little concerned it's gonna make anthrax in there.

*Edit because people are awesome, it’s a bear skull! Never seen one minus the fur but still plus all the fleshy bits before. I have contacted my local department of fish and wildlife to make sure it’s legal before I call the shop back and ask if they can hold it for me. Things like this are a grey area. Technically it cannot be sold without its proof of legal take OR as completed taxidermy w/ shop record, so I want to be sure I have an OK before I spend money on something that could be considered wildlife trafficking.
