Tonight at the barn party my grandpa discovered the Sky Guide app on my phone and wandered off into the night just pointing at stars and marveling at the night sky. Best part was when I showed him how to find the moon and we found it on the other side of the planet. ✨
HMMMM

The cool thing about kids is when they ask you about things, you can learn new things. I’ve found out a lot about stars the last couple years. Recently I wanted to know what star I can see best from my deck, so I got an app that star maps for me using my phone’s position (sky guide). I found out I’m looking at Arcturus. Tonight they asked what star they could see by the moon, and I opened up Sky Guide. I immediately forgot what we were doing because there was an alert notification that the ISS was going to be visible in a flyover in 10 minutes. I told the kids we’d be able to see the ISS for real if we went outside, and we went downstairs and piled onto the porch, staring up into the gap between the big trees that frame our night sky. The app showed us where to look. We watched the sky. A bright, shining space station sailed out, and on, and through our night. We watched until the astronauts went to their next position of their eastward journey. We waved goodnight.
And then I followed ecstatic children, exclaiming about the wonder of seeing people travel and live in space, shining, of the magic of orbital mechanics.
This is the magic we forgot, that we became numb to as adults- the incredulous, astonishing implausibility that we can sail through space. That a plate of plastic, and metal, and crystal, and lightning in my hand can show me when that will happen and where, that I can tell the ISS with ease that we waved goodnight and hope they’re well and happy- and that the people by the stars could respond tonight!
Am I high or is Sirius flickering to different colors really fast?? Right outside my window.
Omg all three of them are a flickering triangle ⚠️
