M'aiq!!! I found you
Oops valentines day has gone. Oh well.
Skyrim DLC will finally be released for PS3 in February! I'm so excited holy shit. And it's going to be half price for the first week!
Skyrim help?
okay, so I'll post it under a cut cause this might get long. I need second opinions about getting it for PC and stuff.
PP4: What Does Bethesda Owe?
After something of a school induced hiatus Pointless Pretension returns! *crickets* OKAY! Like most of the world I’ve spent the last month playing Skyrim on my system of choice the PS3. I can almost see some of you cringe as you relive some of the bug related horror stories you’ve heard. From game breaking lags, near constant freezes and even a glitch that prevents the PC from interacting with NPCs, this version of Skyrim seems to plagued with problems. Problems that probably should not exist in the first place but that issue is neither here or there. The real problem is what does Bethesda owe those that experienced these problems? First off I’d like to say that I have experienced the lags and game freezes that plague so many of us but I’ve also never fought an invisible dragon, been unable to use the X button or had my magic resistance so significantly damaged that I had to avoid mages completely. So I haven’t experienced anything game breaking only extremely annoying and at times so frustrating I almost threw my controller through the T.V. The fact of the matter is though there are people who have. To those who say they’re lying or over exaggerating, please just…stop. These problems aren’t going to get fixed by ignoring them or attacking those who want to talk/whine about them. “Alright,” you’re probably saying to yourselves (or me I really don’t know how crazy you are) how do we get these problems fixed?” Well…we’ll get to that in a minute. First we need to determine exactly what Bethesda’s role is in all this because that will determine how we as a community should proceed. There are those saying that this is Bethesda’s responsibility 100% and they owe us a refund or new copies of the game and blahdie blah *winy nerd voice.* They have a point. Bethesda did make a product that wasn’t fully tested before release and was plagued with problems they should have known about. While these arguments are valid, the opposition’s is almost equally valid and goes a little something like this: once they release the product it is our job as consumers to wait, research and then buy. Fact of the matter is most PS3 users were aware of the possibility that Skyrim would be somewhat broken since similar problems had a tendency to crop up in both Fallout 3 and New Vegas. So going out and buying the PS3 version of the game as soon as it came out is actually quite foolhardy when you think about it on a logical level. (on an interesting note I got my copy at 12am 11/11/11). Of course the flip side of this coin is that Bethesda themselves should have been aware of these problems before the release date and worked to fix them instead of releasing a broken game. From what I understand many of the issues that we faced when the game first came out were caused by the large save sizes found on this version. The reason the problem was so quickly diagnosed was because (as I stated) these were the same problems found on PS3 version of New Vegas. So it would be impossible for Bethesda to have not known about this and would be inexcusable if they weren’t looking for these issues specifically when they tested it. Now anything is possible. Bethesda may not have known about these problems before release. I’m not saying that Bethesda definitely knew that save files would become an issue. I’m saying that is highly unlikely that they didn’t. Based off of that, yes, of course Bethesda needs to take responsibility for their product and do something to pay back their customers. The question is what? I really don’t believe they owe us a refund because everyone that rushed out to buy the game (myself included) really should have waited till the game had been out for awhile before we acted. No Bethesda doesn’t owe us a refund but they do need to stand by their product and take responsibility for the problems it has. Fortunately Bethesda seems to be doing this already. They’ve released two patches within the month that Skyrim’s been out so they’ve clearly been listening to the fan’s complaints and are responding. So everything is all happiness and rainbows and sunshine lollipops cause they’re fixing it! Well no, unfortunately the patches have a tendency to break some element of gameplay or only provide a temporary fix for their problem. All we can do is make Bethesda aware of the issues and hope they manage to code a patch that works. We just have to wait and see and react to whatever they throw at us. Now please understand I’m not saying that we’re powerless, quite the opposite in fact. I’m saying that it now becomes our responsibility to hold Bethesda responsible. So by all means when you run into a game shattering glitch complain. Let Bethesda know what’s broken because they’ve shown a willingness to fix problems quickly. One interesting thing I’ve seen on forums is people compiling lists on what the patches vs. what they break. I think it would be interesting if these lists found a way into Beth’s main forum. So our best bet (if we want to keep enjoying the games we love) is to communicate with them. Let them know what’s broken and demand they fix it expediently. That’s it for this weeks PP. Happy gaming
