Head of the Department
The outer gate guards were gone and so were the ones alone the inner checkpoints. Hindis, Hidden, the Lady’s Response sealed the locks behind him like he was a common operative and not the undisputed lord and dictator of all that he surveyed. What. Was. Going. On?
The first guard he ran into was leaning against the wall, chewing… something, and reading a magazine. He wasn’t prepared for any sort of assault. He wasn’t on duty because he lacked his weapons and he had better not be on duty because he was working on a leisure activity. A leisure activity that was only ever allowed in the barracks. Hidden saw red.
Held high off the ground the poor man was caught around the throat. Pinned to the wall and scrambling for some sort of purchase as Hidden held him, he stared at the big rogue like he had seen a ghost. And well hadn’t he? By all accounts the great Hidden was dead, and while rumors abound about the destruction of half the council leadership, no one had actually seen the once leader of asset retention, and really no one was going to be out there looking, not when they could run for their lives.
“You have six seconds to explain why you are out of uniform, off your post, and breaking barracks orders.”
The last thing the guard remembered before the world went black was stuttering for eight whole seconds before he would wake, naked, bound, with a dagger stuck through the meat of his hand. His blood spelled out a warning for the next guard to come along. GET BACK TO WORK BEFORE I FIND YOU
The calculations were wrong on the board. It was such an easy mistake the head in the jar was still mildly surprised the other researchers didn’t notice it. Mildly, because in the grand scheme of things, they were… not smart. As much as Hidden appreciated research, it was all erred much more on the sadistic curiosity side of things than any advancements of technology. All the scientists were once assassins, many of whom chose the profession that came from the same evolution as serial killers and people who talk in a movie theater. It was all a very ‘lets see what this does’ mentality rather than concrete science. Which the head could appreciate, but their lack of controls, their wide array of trials and errors, it was any wonder they managed to get anything done.
In the past, the head in the jar would glare and black tentacles would offer support and skills and gods above and below actually make sure all observations were written down rather than anecdotal histories of each project. This time though, the lead scientists had upset him. Jokes were not uncommon at his expense, but this time, the head’s past life was up on the screen and they were mocking in particular his once body’s stamina with the infamous subject O-A. This time, the calculations in question could blow up in their faces for all he cared.
The head didn’t expect his revenge to work out so well in his favor, though. The leader, organizer, and all around director of the other scientists remained too close to the phoenix, too long. Extracting samples was always risky business, especially now that attempts to create larger quantities of ‘spark’ were underway and often left the birds volatile and or weakened by the process. The head scurried away from the scene just in time to watch from a safe distance as the phoenix perished and lead into a cycle of rebirth before everyone could get out of the blast radius. Mr. ‘Not-even-virgins-go-that-fast’ wasn’t fast enough to save his own hide. Fitting.
All this culminated in the most surprising part of the whole endeavor, the team needed to pick a new leader and rather than doing anything by logical means, as per their usual it turned into a damned popularity contest. Who would be the new head of the department? The head tapped the side of his jar with an inky black tentacle. He was already a head, why not? He was a better scientist than all of them and they had made vast improvements in research and survivability since he was revived from whatever dark depths his soul had been in prior to resurrecting. He gestured with his tentacles as much as could be made out with his limited conversation skills and the others listened. They all cast their ballots and looked distraught as they finished their tallies.
The previous head had demanded they keep the head silenced from conversation, not trusting the tongue of something with no throat, but now that head was to give them orders. The jar was fitted with telepathic communicators and patched into the mainframe of the compound… unfiltered.
The best one for the job of securing any lines of communication beyond a basic subset was already overly busy. Smokeshroud was attending the mass exodus of operatives from the conclave, helping Talah as much as possible and completely neglecting any other work he might need to be doing back at the base. He wasn’t even aware the head existed yet. He was just hoping there would be enough of an operation left behind when their real boss finally returned and didn’t kill him in the process.
He was going to kill Talah. Fodder. No, he was going to kill Talah first, and then keep killing him until he was Fodder again. And then kill Fodder.
Communications was empty. Smokeshroud was also going to die. No worse. What could he do worse? He was going to put Skyshine in a box, but that box into another box and mail the damnedable bird to Atlas for good and then send Smokeshroud to the opposite end of the planet and keep him broken and busy until he gave up ever hoping to see her again.
It took him the better part of the day, but he eventually found staff around that stayed conscious long enough to explain what had happened through his compound. Through all his bases and his whole conclave. No one knew how the council felt about the new situation, most were locked away in hiding in case the threat came after their lives. No one had seen the Lady of the conclave or her minions of darkness. The one upside was those that were left were of two breeds: paralyzed with fear, or exceptionally loyal, both were situation Hidden could deal with and the rest of his day was spent getting operations back up and functioning, spanning the globe with one technology or portal or another and relocating the best operatives for each job in each district. The conclave would shrink, and considering some areas were devastated by the loss of their council members, those locations could be cannibalized and resources shared to others. Lastly, the word went out that asset retention would not be seeking those who left within the specific confines for Talah’s approach. They would all be easier to hunt down if they thought themselves safe from his grasp… and who knows, perhaps some of them could remain retired, but a few he refused to let escape his clutches.
Yet in his rage and frustration and fixing everything from top to bottom, the usual careful and detailed Hidden forgot to ask his scientists who the new head of the department was. Oh well, he could worry about that later. He had to right everything as quickly as possible or miss Neri’s birthday party. At least he had some leftover property to pass off as a gift to her.

Liana K spends 25 minutes playing Skyshine’s Bedlam, talks about the pressures of working in creative fields, the way current market trends affect a creator’s ability to write challenging original work, speaks about the frustrations I’ve been going through trying to figure out how to market The Untold Tale, and dances around the plot in ways that amuse me a lot.
