ATLANTICAN TECHNOLOGY

ENERGY SOURCES

Steam continues to be the primary source of Atlantican energy. With water surrounding the city on nearly every side, the people are unlikely to run out of this resource any time soon. Due to the build-up of uncomfortable heat pockets and the corrosive and health-damaging affects of condensation on the lower levels, there has been a growing push to move forward to an all-electric society. Such a conversion will take some time to complete; subsequently, many of the building's core systems continue to be powered by steam.

Electricity, a secondary and somewhat limited resource, is generated from steam-powered turbines that gather energy from the heat of water boiled by burning coal. Although there are ways to store up this power for auxiliary use, the amount of power generated from the turbines is far from enough to power the entire city. Due to these limitations, as well as the cost of city-wide mechanical conversion and the obvious hazards of using electricity down below, only the upper levels can enjoy light, heat, and some forms of entertainment at the flick of a switch.

Ethanol, or ethyl alcohol, is a wholly organic fuel source still in development in the laboratories of the Great Atlantican Institute of Technology. While significantly less efficient than ye olde petrol, ethanol is the most likely source of energy to carry Atlantica into the diesel age. Created through the process of fermentation in much the same way as alcohol, a great deal of fuss has been made the recent ban of alcoholic beverage production in favor of creating and experimenting with this promising substance.

MECHANICAL USE

The Bathysphere Transit System is the most popular way of travel between the Atlantican towers. Powered by air pressure and hydraulic force, they are by far the cheapest means of transit, if considerably slow and cramped by comparison to the monorail. The bathysphere transit system is very accessible, being located on the lower and middling levels. Bathyspheres of various types and outfitting can also be used for exploration and building repair.

The Steam-Powered Monorail is a lofty, rapid-paced rail car system connecting the four main buildings of Atlantica with the best modern engineering can design. Accessible from the upper levels, the monorail is a touch more expensive and somewhat limited on where it can take its passengers. With ethanol technology on the horizon, it is projected to become the western hemisphere's first ethanol-powered transport system.

Entertainment, while still largely non-mechanical, has benefited greatly from various technological advancements. Silent movie theaters and nickelodeons can be accessed by anyone on the middle and upper levels for the price of admission, and record players are the new hot item for every well-to-do household. While complex machines and automata may only be displayed during exhibitions or fairs after obtaining proper permission, robotic entertainment can be found throughout the lower levels in various illegal forms, including vaudeville acts and battle arenas.

SAFETY MEASURES

Air Filtration and Redistribution are paramount to the comfort and survival of all citizens in Atlantica (more or less). As steam builds up heat to power the turbine generators and factories belch flames and soot at regular intervals, the atmosphere of the lower levels must be circulated for everyone's health and safety.

The atmosphere of the lower levels consistently passes through a series of interlocking pipes that draw cool, fresh air from above with added oxygen as it passes through the tree farms, while used, hot air and carbon monoxide are simultaneously expelled through massive vents a few feet above sea level while cold water is drawn up from below to serve as coolant.

The lower levels are still quite humid and often suffer from uneven temperatures and occasional indoor weather phenomena, but the filtration and redistribution pipeline helps to keep air both regulated and breathable for the lower and working classes.

Sectional Locks, while usually inactive, have been installed in strategic locations on every floor of every building, dividing one level into four sections. These locks, which consist of heavy, air-and-watertight, interlocking doors, are designed to slam shut in the even of a wall breach, riot, or house fire. In doing so, these locks offer invaluable protection to the rest of the level and its occupants.

AGRICULTURE

Most plant life and produce are grown and gathered in massive hydroponic greenhouses. From these structures, the people of Atlantica are able to enjoy a healthy if meager intake of locally-grown fruits and vegetables in addition to that in distribution from trade. In addition to edibles, several tree farms have been made to help produce all-important coal for the city's functions, ethanol for experimentation and future development, and supplementary oxygen for the people down below.
