“Human interpersonal relationships are very strange sometimes,” Vision commented as he sat down on the opposite end of the couch from Skye, his eyes still on Tony, Bruce and Pepper as they bickered over something Tony had done.
Skye snorted, finishing something on her tablet and setting it aside. “You’re not wrong. Sometimes they’re strange, even to us.”
Vision turned his mechanical blue eyes to her with a bewildered expression that she found endearingly human. “You sound as if you speak from experience?”
She hesitated for a moment before nodding slowly. “You could say that most of my attempts at a relationship have been… strange. Life’s complicated.”
Vision nodded. “I recall from your contact with JARVIS that you at times hinted at discontent with your current romantic partner.” It wasn’t quite a question.
“Discontent. Right.” Skye leaned back with a sigh. “Vision, do you think you’re capable of falling in love?”
He considered his response for a moment. “Given that the Mind Stone thus far seems to have given me capability for the full range of human emotion, I see no reason why that one should be excluded. Therefore I would assume that it is possible under the correct circumstances.”
Skye nodded. “So follow up question: do you feel sexual attraction?”
Vision tilted his head in another very-human gesture. “I do not believe so. Objectively speaking, Miss Maximoff, Miss Romanov, Miss Potts and yourself are all quite visually striking in different ways. But…”
“But no desire to jump into bed with anyone,” Daisy finished for him. Vision nodded and she smiled in return. “Then you understand the basic gist of my past relationship issues,” she went on. “I’m Ace. Asexual.”
“From your tone and expression, I assume that your past… boyfriends… were not understanding of your orientation?”
Skye snorted. “Um, well, no. Most people equate romantic love with willingness to have sex. And I did try it, a few times. I’m not incapable. I like a lot of the stuff that leads up to sex; hugs, kisses, cuddles. Cuddles can be the best thing in the world when I’m feeling sad or lonely. But I got really tired of pretending to enjoy the rest of it when a guy doesn’t understand that the one doesn’t have to lead to the other. But there’s so much pressure from other people sometimes, you know? I get that they want me to be happy, but I’m not sure they get that a normal relationship isn’t likely to do that for me.”
“May I hug you, Skye?” Vision asked in a low voice.
Startled, Skye nodded and scooted closer to him on the couch. Vision wrapped his arms around her and drew her against his chest; it was much more comfortable than she’d expected hugging a machine to be, and she let her head rest against his shoulder.
They sat quietly for a few peaceful moments before Vision spoke again. “You were always a good friend to JARVIS, even though he only existed virtually. You have transferred much of that to me, since we met,” he began gently.
“There’s a lot of Jay in you,” Skye agreed quietly. “But I have learned that there’s a lot more to you than that, since we met in person.”
“Perhaps you would find a relationship with me could resolve some of your problems? Particularly since it would seem that we are much the same?”
The quiet suggestion took Skye by surprise. She’d adored JARVIS, and getting to know Vision had been pretty great too. Would it work? “Why?” she managed to ask.
Vision smiled; she saw it when she peeked up at him and he met her eyes. “Because of who you've been, and whomever you'll become." She blinked, and he elaborated. “You’ve never treated me as lesser because of my origins, and I’ve always felt a sense of respect between us. I would very much like to see if the kind of love you desire could grow between us.”
“There’s nothing in the world like the feeling of being loved and accepted for who you are,” Skye told him after a moment. “Yes, Vision, I think I would like that too. Thank you.”
“I fear I still have much to learn about relationships,” Vision admitted. “Despite access to worldwide networks of information, it is never something I have tried to do.”
She smiled. “That’s okay. I don’t think there has ever been a friendship like ours outside of science fiction anyway; I’m fine with seeing where things go on their own. If we make mistakes, we talk it out honestly and try to make things better. Though I’ll admit that I’m not always the best at talking about stuff that bothers me.”
“We shall learn together, then,” Vision stated.
Skye nodded and snuggled closer; she smiled when he adjusted his arms to hold her more comfortably. “Together,” she agreed.
