Queen Ruby hated and feared Peril with a passion. The only reason she didn't throw her out immediately from the tribe when her mother Scarlet disappeared, was her oldest dragonet, (Y/n). She didn't know or what they saw in Peril, but they adored her as much as Ruby hated her. But she tolerated it and respected her dragonet's love interest, and let Peril stay. She was too busy to deal with Peril at the moment anyway. Queen Ruby must clean the mess her mother made into the entire Sky kingdom after all.
Being the eldest of Queen Ruby's dragonets does not particularly mean being mature. Instead, you had the curiosity of a hatchling and a rather strange fascination for burning stuff. That's where Peril comes into play. You both played with experiments on the study of burning stuff (you call it burnology) and even of Peril's firescales. Quietly, you hoped to find a way for your friend to touch things without burning it. The least that these trials do is to make Peril involved and feel wanted by someone when everyone else hated her.
Today was yet another trial, but a more special occasion. "This time," you say, slipping chainmail gloves onto your talons. "With these, dragons can touch you, or the other way around." It was the same type of SkyWing medal used to keep the prisoners on their towers and lined the inside of the glove with more layers of heat resistant materials.
Peril looked doubtful, which was a look you get a lot. Her blue eyes flicker over the various burn scars that practically covered your arms. Further up, a major burn was seared on your neck and snout when she accidentally stumbled onto you when coming into your (as you call it) lab. She winced just looking at them. You should hate her like every other dragons, yet you were persistent to help her. That was what she loved about you; never giving up or shy to help others, sorta like their mother. Giving a steamy sigh, Peril held her talons out for you to grab. A giddy grin spread on your face, carefully reaching out and lightly took her talon with the gloves. The hold was extremely light and timid, but then allowed their own talon to grasp Peril’s and gave it a comforting squeeze before you pulled your covered claws away, shaking them to cool it off. "(Y/n), are you alright?" Peril asked. "Better than ever!" you reply, showing her your unharmed talons. The firescales SkyWing’s eyes widened. No burns or scars. "With some more work, I can get the perfect formula to work and we can have real physical contact." "That sounds blazing," Peril says, smiling. "You look really pretty smiling," you say abruptly, a look that Peril couldn't figure out. Genuine? Love? Either way, Peril flushed, making the lab more hot than usual. "I think you make an amazing scientist," said Peril. "Better than a future heir to the SkyWing throne." "Why not be both?" you ask with a sly look. "When I'm ruler, you can be my person bodyguard and companion." Peril gave a crooked smile. "When the day comes to fight for the throne, I'll be cheering for you." "Like I cheered for you," you tell her.
By far my most famous story I think. This almost got its own independent story, had gotten a co-writer for it too, but was a bit of a daunting challenge for younger me and didn’t click with the other author. But there was art for it and it’s awesome.

Battle broke out. IceWings, SandWings, and SkyWings. Red, white and gold scales flashed in the sun. Claws, teeth, fire, and ice. The cool peninsula air that wraps around you was almost uncomfortably. Almost.
It was a general attack made on Blaze's fortress on the border to perhaps overwhelm her force that protected her so closely. But of course Queen Glacier provided her ally with forces to guard her.
With blood stained talons, you slashed at a SandWing, tearing the soft underbelly open that blossomed with blood. They shrieked and sent a fire ball of rage at you. Skillfully, you dodged it with years of practice on the battlefield as you hurled yourself at your opponent then released a plume of fire in their face, raking your claws across their neck. As revenge, the SandWing slashes at your face, cutting into it and leaving three small, bloody slashes on the scales. You kicked them hard to ground them at last. Screaming, they fell from the air to ground, charred and bloodied.
When you turned to see your fellow SkyWings, your heart sank to your stomach. The IceWing reinforcements have come, taking out SkyWings from the air, their red bodies littering the ground below like pools of blood. An IceWing takes notice and comes at you with a roar. You dove away from their serrated claws, doing a barrel roll to evade them. Claws met scales as you slashed at their shoulder, cutting deep into the muscle. The IceWing screamed, falling to the ground with a lame wing. During your triumph, you didn't notice a second ice dragon behind you, tackling you from the air to the ground. The impact made the air dissipate from your lungs, eyes bulging with surprise. Serrated claws were on your long neck, her feet and tail keeping your other limbs pinned as silvery fog rolled from their jaws. Suddenly, she stop, dark eyes trained on your belly. They filled with shock, looking up to you in surprise, leaving you confused at the expression. "You’re with egg?" she asked, clearly surprised still. You nearly laugh. "No I'm not!" you snarl. "I wouldn't be out here if I was."
A million thoughts seemed to go through the IceWing's head as they stood over you. Giving a glance over her shoulder, the IceWing suddenly thwacked your neck in a single, hard chop of her talons. An electric jolt goes down your spine at it, then dark spots began to eat away your vision, struggling to speak as your body went still. This what death must feel like as the world goes black.
◈━◈━◈━◈━◈
When you woke up, voices faded in slowly to your ears. "-lieve this SkyWing is with egg, your Majesty." "That's weird!" "Indeed, Queen Blaze. The SkyWings are either reckless about sending soldiers out or they are not aware." "Soooo, does this mean we have two prisoners?" A sigh. A very annoyed sigh. "I suppose so, your Majesty." You lift your head up, but it's weighed heavily by a metal muzzle around your snout. The sound of your blood rushing in your ears was near deafening. Everything came back slowly, but in front of you stood a beautiful gold-white SandWing, her black eyes looking at you with fascination. "Hello there, dear!" Queen Blaze greets cheerily. "I heard that you’re here to attack me. That’s not very nice, you know." Are you... being scolded? "But I think I'll forgive you since everyone likes me! You like me, right?" Better than Burn perhaps. "They can't tell me if they have that silly muzzle! IceWing, remove it," Blaze orders. Hesitantly, the IceWing does, shooting you a cold glare. At least the weight of it was gone. Though your talons were still shackled. "Would you like something? A lizard? Snow? Fish?" Blaze offered. Why was she so... generous? "Yes! IceWing, fetch us some roasted lizards. They're my favorite." Reluctantly, she went. Burn pokes at your (red/orange/gold) scales curiously. "What are you doing here anyway? Isn't it like, really cold? Because it really is!" Hence the giant fur blanket draped over her shoulders and cascading down her back. "Yes?" you say, though it came out a bit croaky. A draft from the window made you shiver. "Great moons! I am so right!" Blaze exclaims, talons thrown up in exasperation. She then pokes your belly, making you stand up with a hiss, wings flicked out defensively. "I'm not doing anything!" she defends. "I'm just seeing whether you’re having a dragonet or not." Her eyes turned dark, as if they needed to be as they were pitch black like Burn's. "I don't know what that IceWing told you, but I'm not with egg," you explain angrily. "I went into the breeding program once about two months ago, and it turns out that I’m incompatible to have dragonets, so how could I possibly-" "I was right!" came an exclamation. The IceWing was at the doorway, a camel skin bag that smelled delicious around her neck. "I've been with egg before, SkyWing, and I know what it looks like on other dragons. Your stupid healers were wrong." Blaze gasped. "Isn't this exciting?! I should so totally throw a party for you. Congrats." "Throw a party for every prisoner we have, why don't you?" the IceWing muttered under her frosty breath. "That means you have to stay here, with me!" Blaze says excitedly. "Well, until I contact Queen Glacier about what to do with you but you can totally stay here as long as you don't kill me." Die at the talons of the IceWing Queen or the ditzy company of a SandWing princess that started the war? You chose the latter. "Fine," you say. "I will stay here peacefully and make no attempts to kill you. (As long as you don't kill me of course)." "You heard them," the SandWing said, waving ringed talons at the Icewing. "Go send Queen Glacier that I have a prisoner. A nice prisoner!" Grumbling, the IceWing slipped the bag off her neck and disappeared through the door again. Blaze pushes the bag closer with her barbed tail with surprising grace, snatching it up and chomping on a talon full of lizards. "I bet if all the blood and stuff was washed from your scales, you'll be a lot more prettier," said Blaze with a mouthful. This caught you off guard and flushed. "Thank you?" "I can't have an ugly SkyWing going around in my fortress, right?" she chides. "Oh! I bet you'd look great in topaz! Let me go find a spare necklace."
Without having your saying, she swept out of the room, leaving you alone and cold. You didn't realize how much Blaze's scales kept you warm until she left. Now you oddly longed for company, but you were too tired to worry. What you were worried about was the fact that you are now a prisoner of war while carrying an egg. Munching on a couple lizards (Blaze was right about roasted lizards being her favorite, they are delicious), you fell into a deep sleep.
It turns out that being a prisoner of war of Blaze is not that bad. Other than the venomous threats and glares from her soldiers, but all was well. It felt more like pampering if anything! You accumulated decent food, a couple of Blaze's personal furs, and you and the SandWing heir would talk a lot with each other over several days.
Blaze came back with a guard who was carrying a bucket. "You can go now," she says to the guard. He looked confused, setting the bucket down and went away to guard the door. "Here you go, dear. You can use this to scrub that nasty stuff off your scales." Lifting an eyebrow, you took the bucket. There was a rag floating in the water. The water itself was freezing (most likely it was melted snow) but you began to clean yourself, scrubbing mostly your talons as they were caked with blood. The whole time, Blaze watches you, occasionally looking at the rings on her talons. Once done, you looked back in the bucket, the water now a murky red. "Wait," Blaze says, reaching into the bucket, making a face as she grabbed the dirty rag. "You forgot your face." Patiently, you let Blaze clean your face, wincing as she cleaned the cuts the SandWing soldier gave you. Blaze was gentle though, even holding your face in her other talon to keep it steady so she could have a more careful touch. "There. I'm sure your face was prettier than without the scratches," she finished. You felt your face heat up. Was she trying to flatter you? If so, she was succeeding. "I also have this." Blaze takes a necklace from around her neck, letting it hang in her talons to glitter in the light. It was a simple necklace with a silver chain, a droplet shaped topaz at the end. She draped it over your head and letting it set on your chest. "I was right! You do look great in topaz," Blaze chirped, clapping her talons together giddily. She points to a similar one around her own neck accompanied by a gold band with rubies. "And look, I have the same one! Twinsies!" Every scale felt pale with panic. Does Blaze even know what it means to have the same pieces of treasure?! Yet, a small part of your mind was very calm about it, happy even. "Thank you," you managed to stammer hotly. Blaze smiles back. "I know. I'm great." Hoo boy...
◈━◈━◈━◈━◈ About five months later---
Blaze sits in her room, writing a letter in candle light. (With a quill. She wouldn't want to ruin her claws of course.)
Dear Queen Glacier,
It's been very cold. So I've requested more blankets and rations. Hope you don't mind!
I think I've been engaged to a SkyWing. They’re really great though! Super pretty too, even with their scars. She tells good stories of the battlefield and listens to me! They even told me of some attacks she knows of, I know that will make you happy. Even when she's grumpy and tired, we get along. The soldiers don't really like them though, so I ordered them to like her like they like me. Everyone should like me and my mate!
That's fun to say. Mate. Wife. I love having a wife!
From, Queen Blaze
P.S. I'm going to be a mommy.
Blaze looks up from her letter and over to (Y/n) who was sleeping peacefully at her side among a nest of blankets. Blaze loves it when they cuddle with her. They’re so cute!
The IceWing, she keeps forgetting her name, says (Y/n) will have the egg very soon! Then comes the long wait for it to hatch. (Y/n) says it's a boy. Though Blaze hopes it's a girl. Either way, she can't wait to see them. Even though it won't look like her.
◈━◈━◈━◈━◈
"WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME SOONER?!" came a loud roar from the SandWing princess atop the fortress, the icy foundation trembled slightly. The soldiers looked up from their activities in curiosity by the furious roar of Blaze. One would be surprised how much of her other sisters showed in her rage compared to her ditzy nature.
She slithered through the halls with fluid grace, hurrying to her room. Pained groans and whimpers came from the other side of her door with muffled words as she came closer.
What is going on? Can she help? Was the egg coming through properly? If not, what would happen? Especially to her beloved (Y/n)?!
As panicked as she was, Blaze carefully opened the door, cautiously peeking her snout in. She saw you laying down, panting in hot breathes that made the room warm. There was a slight tremble to your body as you caught your breath. Odd fluids stained the blankets and smelled funny. But where was the-? "You did great, (Y/n)," the IceWing praised, busy carefully wrapping an egg in a nest of blankets. It was average size for a dragon’s egg and having a pale orange-yellow shell. "Thank you, Frost. I am glad to have you assist me," you say, shifting your (red/orange/golden) body, you curled around your egg, muttering to it quietly.
The IceWing exited the room and nearly bumped into the SandWing princess. "Your Majesty," she greeted, surprised. "You just missed (Y/n) giving egg, but they’re recovering with the egg." "I-uh, thanks," Blaze stuttered, focusing on her room. "You’re dismissed or whatever.” She quickly added before nearly barreling past the IceWing into the room. As soon as she stepped one foot in the room, Blaze then moved more carefully, maneuvering her body so that she wouldn't accidentally stumble around your egg. "Look Blaze," you said in a soft tone, completely fixated on the egg. "Just think, in one year, we'll be parents." "I'm still thinking of awesome princess names," she said, settling next to you. You lean into her scales affectionately. "It's going to be a boy." "I still have name rights," Blaze announced, childishly. You laugh. "Alright," you say. "But make it good." Blaze thumped her tail with a huff. "I can think of lots of great names! Like..." She paused, thinking. "Uh, Sandy or something. Maybe a gem like... Topaz! Our coupling treasure." "As dragonet mother, I approve of the name Topaz," you proclaim, curling your tail into hers. "This will make awesome scrolls. "SandWing Queen Blaze married to SkyWing with Hatchling!". Wouldn't that be grand?" "Absolute-amaze-jumping rabbits," Blaze grinned in triumph. Beat that Burn and Blister!
◈━◈━◈━◈━◈
That triumph withered to ash and smoke when her world crumbled about a year later.
Princess Blaze insisted that you stretch your wings after spending nearly a month in her room with your egg. So she sent you out with her best guards to fly around the area for an hour while Blaze watched over the egg.
Later, the sound of cracking made Blaze jump. It was the egg. It was hatching! Excited, she darted from her room to get a messenger to her beloved that their dragonet was finally hatching.
But instead she came out to a bloodied, half dead guard and her beloved SkyWing on the brink of death. "Healers! Do we have any healers?!" she demands, rushing to your side, holding your head gently in her talons. Soldiers scrambled from their gawking and tried to go out with the order. But they were all soldiers of war with no medical experience, how could they possibly help? "(Y-y/n), who did this to you?" she cried, sobbing.
You nearly looked the same when you first met, only last time you didn't have a gouge in your throat erupting blood. Blaze gave a heavy sob, tears welling in her obsidian eyes. A bloodied talon touched hers, as you opened tired looking eyes, and looked at her. Even now while she cried and fell apart, she was still beautiful. With whatever energy you had left, you tugged your silver necklace over your head and pressed the bloodied jewelry into Blaze's talon on your face. She was so warm... The SandWing princess laced her claws with yours with the necklace, holding tight as if she were holding onto your last string of life and she would never let it go.
But she didn't, that was instead your job.
You weakly smiled up at her as the blood in your wound slowed its flow and you heaved one last pained breath before going limp. "(Y/n)?" asked Blaze softly. You didn't respond. "(Y/n)!" "(Y/n), no!" she wailed, hugging your body tight against her, not bothered by the blood. "You promised to raise Topaz with me! And be my queen when we won the war! You promised, (Y/n)!"
She broke down into a rage of heavy sobs and tears as she clutched harder. Her world was gone.
Until a small voice seemed to ring over the pained sounds of the mourning SandWing princess. "Mama?"

--An hour before the assassination of (Y/n)---
This wasn't Deathbringer's first trip to the chilly border of the Sand and Ice Kingdom. He was practically stationed here until he is called to report any important information that was viable to the war. Sometimes, he was sent in to kill a general or a couple soldiers to make sure that lamb brained Princess Blaze from winning the war. But she has powerful allies and favored by the SandWings, so it was Deathbringer's job to change the tide.
Not too long ago, the assassin learned something very interesting. Princess Blaze... had a partner. A romantic parter. A SkyWing romantic parter who was with egg.
This was a great and informative surprise.
So here he was, waiting patiently under a rock bank, weapon trained in his talons. During the morning, Deathbringer overheard Blaze asking (practically ordering then begging) for her mate to take a break and go for a relaxing fly. She agreed. As now he waited.
Not too soon after, he heard wing beats from the distance becoming audibly louder as they came closer. Deathbringer listened more closely. There were at least three pairs, one being the powerful wings of (Y/n) and two others being guards. Of course. Blaze wouldn't possibly send her beloved alone.
Then, Deathbringer struck. Darting from his spot, surprising the three dragons. Making quick work of one SandWing guard. The second guard leered forward, fire in his maw and his tail arched. (Y/n) didn't stay back either as she too lunged at the Nightwing with fire and claws. Deathbringer gave the SandWing a sharp upper cut to the chin, snapping his jaws close and extinguishing the flames and stuck a metal disk into his shoulder. He howled in pain and lashed out with tail. It narrowly missed him, before ducking under (Y/n)'s tornado wind wings. The strong air buffered Deathbringer's flight and missed the chance to get a slash at her throat. She reeled around gracefully, (e/c) eyes glaring fire, and snapped at the young assassin with their teeth, flames peeking out of her nostrils. Talons taking hold of another disk, Deathbringer made an attempt to throw it, but was tackled from behind. The disk fumbled out of his talons and his claws instead tore (Y/n)'s throat, barely catching onto the topaz necklace around their neck. They gave a choked sound, stumbling in air before grounding herself onto the frozen ground below. Quickly taking another disk from his pouch, Deathbringer hacked at the SandWing's neck who held him, chopping away sandy scales and flesh. The Sandwing guard released him with a roar, then noticed (Y/n)'s fall and managed to throw Deathbringer aside, going to their aid and helping her fly back to the fortress.
He didn't have to follow them. His work had been done.
Deathbringer knew that, without a doubt, that the SkyWing and the guard will eventually die from their wounds. He felt disappointed though, that he didn't get the job as cleanly as he thought he would. But, there was still a small pang of doubt and guilt as he watched (Y/n) limp in the sky back to the fortress, bright against the pale blue sky, a steady stream of crimson falling behind them.
Deathbringer hadn't killed a dragon with egg. It seemed too horrible to carry out. But an order was still an order, and he didn't want to get in trouble with the Queen for failing his task.
That is, until he later learned towards the end of the war that the now-ex-princess Blaze was taking care of a orange-yellow SkyWing dragonet on her own, a topaz necklace hanging around his lithe neck.
He saw him during the whole princess meeting with the dragonets of destiny at Burn's stronghold. The little SkyWing was perched along the wall with an IceWing, barely two or three years old at least, watching the gruesome scenes unfold. He noticed the strange NightWing staring at him, and he too looked back with large (e/c) eyes.
It felt as though Deathbringer was seeing a ghost.
