After almost two weeks in Florida we are back on the road. We were quickly reminded why we installed an air conditioning unit in 2020 and why we like to avoid the south during the summer. It is scolding hot outside! So we stopped in this lake to chill. Literally. While in Florida we: - installed inner cooler - reinforced bike rack - added yet additional storage - flushed the power steering - flushed the brake fluid - greased the brake slide pins - and tighten a lot of bolts Among many small things that added up to a lot. We are slowly getting our grove back and are excited to see you down the road. The ever evolving storage system of the #SlackerVan How do we store all the toys and have enough space to "live" in a 66 sqft box? LAYERS The initial build utilized aluminum bars, but this created a lot of dead space. After one month, we redesigned everything with plywood and routed out channels in the wood to create slide drawers; this removed the need for heavy and space-consuming metal sliders. The main trick was to create the storage to fit the items that we had and those items we knew were in our near future. Each box was created to fit them perfectly. This helps us keep the van organized and discourages us from buying more stuff! 'cause it won't fit anywhere! One of the secrets to happy #vanlife is to make sure that everything has a dedicated space. If not our entire van would become as messy as everyone's 'stuff' drawer. Everything has a place, find it there, put it there after each use. The #SLACKERvan will serve as our Home and systems test vehicle for the next 2 years. We Said goodbye to the #PeaceLoveCar in October of 2017 after 12 years and over 530,000 miles @poweredbyyoga and I @ev4x4 decided we needed a transition vehicle. We took to Craigslist to buy a Van off the internet with out physically seeing it again.... be sure to read our blog about how not to buy a van in South America! I have been shopping for a Mitsubishi Delica for the last 6 years but to buy in Australia and tour for 3 months before selling it again. The Delica is a great vehicle... but it is a unibody and over 25 years old... so that means rust in the wrong places becomes a huge issue... remember the legacy of the PLC? check out @roadtowanderlustfilm Well like most decisions that yeild the most epic adventures, we knew we had to through out all the lessons we learned, so bought a new 30 year old vehicle with 115,735 miles with out ever driving it or any vehicle similar to it. We now as of September 2017 own another vehicle from 1988! The SLACKERvan is a Mitsubishi Delica L300 4x4 diesel mid engine van, that measures 1 foot longer, 1 foot wider and 1 foot higher then the PLC. The PLC has 28sqft of living space the van has over 70sqft! This account will be focused on telling the story of the build, what we used, why we used it, and how we broke it! DONT FOLLOW OUR ORDER OF OPERATIONS FOR YOUR VAN BUILD! We have a weird schedule and due to the Test nature of this project we did not do anything logically. The images above tell a story of getting to know your vehicle by taking everything out of it. Because it is a mid engine diesel we knew it would be loud and HOT, so Insulation was going to be very important, so we started at the base level adding 2mm of sound and 2mm radiant heat insulation, similar to what NASA uses. @lizardskininsulation After 4 months and -10f to 110f and living in a large metal box we are still stoked on the 4mm, 60lbs of spray on Insulation we added to the entire inside of the SLACKERvan.
