Excellent Professional Productions I really enjoyed Salt Lake Acting Company’s production of Good People and the amazing performance by Nell Gwynn as Margie. (Johnny Hebda, UTBA) I loved Salt Lake Acting Company’s How to Make a Rope Swing, and Plan-B Theatre’s Eric(a). The first was simply a really solid production–story supported by excellent actors and designers. The second absolutely changed me. (Dave Mortensen, UTBA) Excellent Directing and Choreography Under the direction of Penelope Caywood, Salt Lake Acting Company’s The Cat in the Hat showed me the beauty of wonderfully unified performance. It took away any misconceptions that theatre for young audiences only needs to be entertaining to kids. This show was beautifully orchestrated between the movement, sound design, and even the set and costume design and had nothing lacking, even if the target audience was little children. Starring Utah playwrights » It proved to be another banner year for local playwrights at Utah theaters. Among the premieres were Shawn Fisher’s "How to Make a Rope Swing" at Salt Lake Acting Company; Julie Jensen’s "Cheat" and Matthew Ivan Bennett’s "A Night with the Family" at Pygmalion Productions; and Bennett’s "Eric(a)," Matthew Greene’s "Adam and Steve and the Empty Sea" and Jenifer Nii’s "Suffrage" at Plan-B Theatre Company. Beginning with "Nothing Personal," Plan-B launched an entire season of works by Eric Samuelsen. The range of subjects in these Utah-penned works was impressive — from racial discrimination in a small New Jersey town to transgender identity; from the problems of Utah women workers during World War II to political issues of the women’s vote. Staging standouts » Among the year’s most notable theatrical performances: Jayne Luke in "How to Make a Rope Swing"; Theresa Sanderson in "Eric(a)"; Richard Scott in "Death of a Salesman"; Max Robinson in "Twelve Angry Men"; Henry Woronicz in "The Tempest"; Marza Warsinske in "Venus in Fur"; April Fossen and Kirt Bateman in "Nothing Personal"; David Ivers in "Richard II"; and Nell Gywnn in "Good People." Dr. Seuss's THE CAT IN THE HAT now at SLAC!

There is something incredible about the light in a child's eyes as they really get into something just for them. I loved seeing this moment for my son at SLAC's The Cat in the Hat, a theatre for young audiences show in which the classic book comes to life in a enjoyable way. The final product is an hour that's "lots of fun that is funny." The evening started with a little preshow by the U of U Youth Theatre that had four young people help the audience learn about Dr. Seuss. The kids were rhyming, dancing, and the creating great visual images. The fun little dances and songs allowed the children in the audience to start getting involved, which is helpful when the Cat is looking for a good rhyme later on and the kids were able to help him out. If you've ever read the book of Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat, then you know the whole spoken script of this stage version. The book was expanded by the National Theatre of Great Britain to about a 45-minute production by helping audience members envision moments between the dialogue, such as the kids coming in from the rain, the fish dreaming about being a whale, and Thing 1 and Thing 2 completely taking apart the house.

When the Cat in the Hat enters Sally and her brother’s home on a rainy, gloomy day, he promises the bored children “lots of fun that is funny.” The Salt Lake Acting Company has a holiday gift, and it is wrapped with a large red bow tie at his neck and a red and white-striped stovepipe hat atop his furry head. The thoroughly delightful and wonderfully enchanting show is, as the gleeful mischief-maker guaranteed, lots of fun that is funny. This is children’s theater at its very best. “The Cat in the Hat” not only engages its young audience members, they are spellbound. Those accompanying the target theatergoers will appreciate the youngsters’ blissful wonderment, and they will fondly recall the witty wordplay, intriguing rhyming and whimsical illustrations from the clever imagination of Theodor Seuss Geisel they, too, have enjoyed.
