Slaughtered Vomit Dolls Review
What can be said to accurately describe the experience of watching Slaughtered Vomit Dolls (2006)? It is probably one of the strangest films I have ever seen. I am still not entirely sure what to make of it. I cannot say that I really enjoyed the film, but there are certainly worse films that I could imagine viewing and after some reflection, I have decided that I don't hate it either. Before deciding to watch SVD, I read and watched several reviews of it. The general consensus is that it is a piece of shit that makes no sense, with few deviations from those and similar statements. I begin each horror film with a relatively open mind, though and was hoping to be able to get more from the film than others had. However, I very quickly realized that these are pretty fair accusations toward the film, although, not entirely.
During my viewing, I was confused the entire time as to what the hell was actually happening. It just seemed to be a collection of randomly placed and weird images that resembled a really bad trip. I wondered if there was truly a plot or if everything that happened was just inside of the main character's head. The most I gathered for certain is that Angela Aberdeen ran away from home when she was thirteen after she set fire to the church because she was molested or raped. She then became a bulimic stripper and then later, a hooker. Further than this, I don't know but I suspect that this girl was on heroin, which gave her fucked up hallucinations.
I found that it helps to read a description of the plot before and/or after watching this in order for it to make any kind of sense. According to IMDB.com, wikipedia.org, and, a few other sources I came across, Angela does indeed suffer from wild hallucinations. If you view the film in that sense and don't waste your time looking for a plot, it does make the experience a bit more enjoyable. I feel as though reviewers try to take this movie too seriously, so it is no wonder they think it's total garbage. I actually found several scenes quite humorous because they were so weird or stupid. As an experimental film, I do not believe that it is a total failure, although I did find myself growing bored at certain points. I was never really disturbed, merely a little creeped out during certain parts but never whole-heartedly repulsed by anything that I saw in this film. I didn't understand the need for all of the vomit and it just seemed pretty irrelevant. Like, okay, I get it. She's bulimic. Why does everyone else have to throw up, as well? The worst part that several reviewers have pointed out is when a man vomits into a cup, drinks it up and vomits back into the cup several times. But, also, as many reviewers have pointed out, this scene quickly loses it shock value due to its repetitiveness.
I give this film .5/5. Overall, this film has very little merit. I felt like it was kind of a waste of my time, but at least I can say that I have watched it now. I will be watching the sequels, but only for the same reason. I came into this expecting to watch something that would disturb or even mildly disgust me, and I was pretty disappointed in the lack of that.
On Friday, I will be reviewing Inside!
What the fuck does Danielle have me watching.
