SLAVE HUTS, BONAIRE (March 5, 2020) Located in the Leeward Antilles of the Caribbean, Bonaire is an island whose major attractions include the white salt pyramids at its southeastern end. And while salt production on Bonaire is now care of American company Cargill, it was once in the hands of slaves who walked seven hours to get to work and would stay at the salt ponds for a week before going back to their families on the weekend. Here are their huts, restored to their original state, as they were in the 1850s. These were used as sleeping quarters and a storage area for personal belongings. The headroom of these abodes is equivalent to the waistline of a typical slave. But if there was any consolation, workers at the salt ponds had a stunning view of the sea. Slavery in Bonaire was abolished in 1863.
