Who’s your favorite between Fahriye and Nigar kalfa. Between Afife and Daye hatun like character analysis?
I have a soft spot for Fahriye kalfa/hatun but will choose Nigar. Fahriye is amazing, strong and loyal that’s why I have a soft spot for her. My problem is that she starts to lack personality when the show continues. I love how how she switched sides from Mahi to Hurrem , not that because I generally love Hurrem, but also it show that Fahriye isn’t just mindless kalfa that obeys her sultana ( mahi) without thinking. Even if Fahriye betrayed Hurrem not Mahi I’d still love her. Fahriye tho starts being bland like everyone else , yeah still brave and strong, but lost what made her unique. It is not about loyalty because Sumbul agha is loyal to Hurrem but he still has his own presence that makes him memorable.
That’s why I basically stand with Nigar Kalfa. Ik she was delusional with her love for Ibrahim but can we put that aside? Nigar is a great example of nailing the system but not being engulfed by it. She is her own person, she chooses who to serve and who to leave for good. She has her own views. For example, she viewed Mahidevran to be weak that’s why she never supported her despite the fact that logically Mahidevran is more beneficial, she is the mother of the very promising prince, the ideal consort of SS that is loved and supported by the royal family. One would ask why Nigar wouldn’t be supporting her or at least trying to get on her good side, right? They didn’t click , Nigar didn’t see the potential and maybe Gulsah’s presence made it harder so Nigar never tried but again when Mahi was fed up with Gulsah Nigar didn’t try to take her place in fact forced Mahi to make Valide promote her position. Nigar is very opportunistic and will make the most out of what she has. Unlike harem servants , Nigar didn’t serve only one person for the long run. As long as she is benefiting she’ll serve. Something @astrangechoiceoffavourites pointed out to me that Nigar wasn’t killed at the end, she killed herself. That just shows she was her own person and her life is not controlled by them.
Between the wet mothers I love both Daye and Afife can’t choose between them.
Afife hatun is your ideal wet mother. She is very neat , fair and dutiful. She doesn’t serve anyone specifically she is there to assert the system. If she is loyal then she is loyal to the system and traditions. Despite being strict and firm, she is also loving and understanding. One of the sane characters actually. She changes her previous ideas about Hurrem , tries to be more understanding and appreciates the love Hurrem and SS have for each other. Unfortunately, her character wasn’t used enough in the rest of the show. My heart shattered at her death tho…
Daye hatun wayy different that Afife with some similarities. Both are strict and firm about the laws and the rules , unlike Afife tho, Daye’s loyalty is personal with Valide sultan not just because she is the harem ruler but because she is devoted to Ayse Hafsa sultan. She is devoted to the person more than the position. Daye only “betrayed” Valide in some situation , giving Leo’s notebook to Hurrem, when Hurrem was lost in the forest and lastly when they burned Hurrem’s face. Actually these “betrayals” were beneficial to Valide at last. Daye realized Hurrem is innocent so why break SS heart over something that didn’t happen? In the two other situations Daye knew if she didn’t step in Valide would be blamed for it cause who else would try to get rid of Hurrem without fearing the consequences? She wasn’t being un-loyal to valide , she was saving her even if it meant going against valide’s will.
The only time she was not loyal is when she kept Nigar’s secret. Daye hatun keeping the secret shows that she is much more than Valide’s servant. Throughout this period she had an internal conflict between being the loyal servant and the mother figure for Nigar. At last she’ll kill herself because no matter how much we see from Daye the person, she doesn’t find a purpose for her life when Valide is dead. She probably lived her whole life devoted to Valide, very unhealthy devotion that when valide dies , life in Daye’s eyes doesn’t have a meaning anymore.Specially since guilt is eating her up because she didn’t tell valide the truth about Nigar sooner.
Honestly, Daye’s character shows are interesting side of how these slaves’ life were fucked up. They are abducted and are forced into obedience till they inherently start loving and devoting themselves for their oppressors. Ik Valide didn’t kidnap Daye herself it is just that she contributes in this fucked up system. Ik a lot of people question Daye’s or Sumbul agha’s morality but honestly who’s gonna be moral after going through all of this? They didn’t choose the system they tried to survive and live. I have a lot to say about Sumbul but not now.

The Library of Congress has digitized the works of Omar ibn Said in both Arabic and English.
An article on the Library of Congress’ collection on Omar ibn Said, a Muslim, West African man kidnapped and sold into slavery in North Carolina. His story is strength. His words a marvel. His spirit, hopefully, still very much alive.
