После преждевременной смерти Гора, Кощей (считавший себя косвенно виноватым в трагедии) взял шевство над мелким триглавым змеенышем и стал регентом при малолетнем царевиче змей. Но даже после того как Горыныч вошёл в лета, он не перенял бразды правления, оставив Бессмертному его полномочия. Вместо этого змей занял позицию стража врат между сказочным и обычным миром, тем самым заняв должность таможенника.
Горыныч по натуре змей весёлый и отзывчивый, но, если ситуация накаляется, то может и подпалить обидчика. К Кощею и Яге относится с уважением и почтением, помятуя детство, проведенное подле них. Часто тусуется с Василисой, которую видит, как маладшую сестру, присматривая за ней, чтобы та не вляпалась в серьезную передрягу, но в то же время поддерживая ее во многих проказах.

Gorynych, by nature, is cheerful and sympathetic, but if the situation is heating up, he can set the offender on fire. He treats Koshchei and Yaga with respect and reverence, remembering the childhood he spent near them. He often hangs out with Vasilisa, whom he sees as a young sister, looking after her so that she does not get into serious trouble, but at the same time supporting her in many mischiefs.
