it’s early in the evening still —   but people have began to flood the corridors ,    get lost through the living room where the ivory curtains swish in an aimless dance ;  a small gathering which is no longer so small ,    because there is no privacy in small gatherings .  the weather is pleasant ,   and the walls hum with a pleasant buzz —   he finds her lounging by the pool ,  and sneaks in to find her with the cautious footsteps of someone who’d been eagerly searching .      “      hey ,      ”       his voice is affectionate ,   tinged with a light scent of expensive liquor as he approaches —    blue eyes glittering ,   awfully reflective .       “      [     …   ]      thank you for   ‘chaperoning’ ,   ”     he jests  ,    amused with himself —  a drink in hand ,   which brings as an offering as he takes the opportunity to slip into his favored seat in the house :    her lap .      “    i’m not really allowed to be alone in the house since the pool incident two years ago .    ”      sebastian informs ,   pressing his rosy cheek to her chest as he accommodates between her pillowy thighs —  completely unconcerned with everything else ,    he suddenly finds he needs this ,   needs her ,    right now .

that faint line between his brows only deepens as the evening moves forwards  ;   ripples of sound and color moving through his ebony-draped silhouette as he remains faithfully untouched ,   unaffected —   unmoved by all .  a ghost waltzing among the living ,   walking on the footsteps of their ever moving shadows ,   capturing spontaneous moments through the lens of his camera before they could dissipate in time .    if he’s perceived at all ,   sebastian’s happy to dismiss it —    not because of some nauseating sense of work ethics ,   but rather because he enjoys the momentary invisibility of being part of the scenery along with his camera ;   it’s a welcome change from the constant scrutiny of day-to-day life .   usually he’s thrilled to travel for work ,   wherever the winds take him he’s happy to go —  this time ,   though ,   he was a little more excited than usual .  he had  ,   foolishly ,   convinced himself that being away from home meant his problems would stay behind — like something tangible he could effortlessly and purposefully forgot to pack ,   like a sock or a watch .   so work ,   but was also a distraction —   from everything ,  himself ,  and his own bleeding vulnerability ,    most of all .     and then his camera flashes —  and he convinces himself it must’ve been a mirage ;    his mind was playing tricks on him ,   conjuring cruel things to mess with this newfound sense of peace .   but no –  no ,   she was real .    he was sure of it ,  because he hears the way her voice is carried across the room ,   and immediately ,    as if engraved inside his bones ,    his ears recognize that sound .    for whatever reason ,   every primal instinct in his body tells him to flee ,    to run away like the clock is about to strike midnight —  and he does ,   he turns abruptly to do just that and has the unfortunately luck of colliding violently against someone else  ;   the sharp clashing of bodies leaves his white shirt soaked in red ,   and his mouth slightly agape —   he’d made a mess of it ,    and too much noise .    precisely what he’d tried to avoid .     “     it’s fine —    leave it ,   it’s fine ,      ”      sebastian dismisses pleasantries and any attempts to salvage his outfit ,   cutting through the small crowd that’d formed around him under the pretense of checking on his camera .   it was fine —   it had survived much worse ,   truthfully ,    he was wet ,    caught off guard ,   and he just wanted out of that room .
