Siberian dog commands

I am going to need to draw people shouting commands at sled dogs, but so far the commands I’ve found recorded in the literature are only ‘left’ and ‘right.’ It occurred to me that I might find out what the commands are in Siberia now, as they may not have changed enormously much in the last century.  I may have been able to find out through Google if I were capable of searching in Russian, but an English language search brought me to the Yakutia Tourism page, and I made enquiries through the contact info there. The helpful representative got in touch with a local dog breeder, and reported back to me that the modern usage is thus:

tai = stop

patya = go forward

kuh = left

pot’ = right

Czigane was a dog that went to Antarctica with Scott. He was brought back to Devon by Harry Pennell who was commander of Terra Nova under Scott. Harry L L Pennell was a Lieutenant with the Ship's Party of the British Antarctic Expedition of 1910. There were 33 sledging dogs, mostly Siberian, collected by Cecil Meares who drove them across Siberia to Vladivostok with the help of the Russian dog-driver, Demitri Gerof. From Vladivostok they brought them by steamer to Sydney and thence to Lyttelton. The dogs were the gift of various British schools, as were the ponies, sledges, tents and sleeping bags used on the expedition. Each one of these was officially named after its sponsor. Czigane was sponsored by Radlyn School, Harrogate who named him Radlyn.

If you go to the link above, you can see all the pictures, and among them that the other side of the collar has a nameplate for Czigane ... but this was the image that came up in my Google search, which raised a momentary eyebrow.

New Land 2013 Team! Her er noen bilder fra tidligere turer. John er relativt kald på vei til Nordpolen. Kyle er på filmoppdrag i Antarktis, Hugh er i med en av sine hunder i Thunder Bay og jeg er isbjørnvakt på Svalbard. Tilsammen har vi mange erfaringer som kommer veldig godt med på vårens ekspedisjon. Over de neste dagene skal jeg skrive litt om trening, forberedelser og introdusere alle ekspedisjonsdeltakerne.
