Sleep Problems Helped By Aromatherapy
By Rishi Loatey Three quarters of the UK population report that they suffer with a sleep problem or a sleep disorder at least a few nights every week. Yet many of these problems could be helped with the use of essential oils. The two most common problems are: Insomnia Worrying about money? Concerned about an important meeting? Agonising over a relationship issue? You're not the only one! 75% of women and 25% of men in the UK report that they struggle to get to sleep. As a result, sufferers find their daytime hours are adversely affected. Problems include reduced energy levels, "moodiness", reduced concentration, reduced productivity and relationship issues. Snoring Snoring is an interesting problem as it often affects family members (or people in the next hotel room) as much or even more than the snorer. A survey by the British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association found that 54% of people have had their holidays adversely affected by snoring. 40% of men and 25% of women suffer from snoring. Snoring is caused when the soft palate tissues at the back of the throat relax too much. This obstructs the entrance to the throat and the soft palate vibrates as air tries to pass through. Help For Insomnia Aromatherapy can help with insomnia. A number of different essential oils give good results for some people including Valerian, Bergamot, Chamomile, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Jasmine, Lavender, Marjoram, Rose, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang. One of the first essential oils that an Aromatherapist might consider for you is Lavender. Many studies have shown that Lavender can help with insomnia. For instance, a study at the University of Southampton found participants reported 20% improved sleep from using Lavender oil. Sometimes combining oils can help. For instance, Lavender combined with Roman Chamomile has been found to be highly effective for many people wanting more sleep. Speak to your Aromatherapist and they will help you to find the essential oils that will best help you. Help for Snoring Many people (and their families!) report improvements with snoring after using Marjoram essential oil. Marjoram oil relaxes and soothes muscles. There are, however, over 30 different species of Marjoram. The one that is most likely to help you is Origanum Majorana. This is also sometimes known as Sweet Marjoram. Again, an oil blend may be beneficial for you and your Aromatherapist might investigate the inclusion of Eucalyptus, Cedarwood, Geranium or, of course, Lavender in a blend to try for you. How to Use The Oils Each oil (or blend) will need to be used in a different way. Some will need to be gently rubbed in to your skin. Maybe under your nose or on your chest. Others will simply need to be close by so that you inhale the aromas during the night, by putting a few drops on your pillow or even simply leaving an open container of the oil blend on a side-table beside the bed. Ask your Aromatherapist how the essential oils they have selected for you should be used. Please Note Some of these essential oils can be strong and can have a powerful effect. Do not use any essential oils without guidance from a qualified Aromatherapist and consult a doctor first if you are pregnant or have a medical condition.
