Writing and Storytelling Mediums
If you’re a writer you might have felt this before - burned out, unable to write what you wish you could, feeling like the words won’t come. One way to break out of the writing slump you could’ve worked yourself into is to change the medium your story is told in. This is by no means a comprehensive list (please recommend more!) but here are some ways to reimagine your story:
Audio Mediums
Podcast: try rewriting your story as a podcast! This can also be a great way to map out the details of your setting, because you have to think a lot about what the elements making sounds are.
Musical: it might seem like way too much work, but this doesn’t have to mean your tradition musical! Your story could be reimagined as a song or a fictional music piece, much like the groups Evelyn Evelyn or The Mechanisms, who weave their stories into their music.
Visual Mediums
Movie/TV Show/Play: transform your WIP into a screenplay and even film it! This can be very tricky to do, but is a great way to practice dialogue. Depending on the length of your WIP, it makes more sense to write a TV show rather than a movie or play, but it’s really up to you.
Art: this could be single art pieces or a comic. This can especially help picturing your WIP as the events take place.
Text Mediums
Rewriting as a different style: if the way you’re writing just isn’t working, try telling the story through documents like diary entries, formal documents, letters, newspaper clipping or any combination of those. This can help flesh out characters and can also help if you feel like telling your story chronologically makes it feel flat.
If you have other ideas, please add on! I think it’s important to recognize that other forms of storytelling are very important and can be helpful for writers to look at!
