I wanted to make a post about how I imagine icelands relation to Russia being during the cold war, so here I am.

Small historical context: Some icelandic officials received funding from the Russian communist party during the Cold War and had meetings as far back as 1922. All of which were kept secretive from the rest of the parliament and the United States. Not everything is based on history. Some are just my personal headcanons of these characters.

Iceland would feel quite trapped, under heavy American influence after his independence in 1944. Despite knowing he is safe under American protection, I can't imagine he would feel content in it all.

After all, iceland is a very independent person and has just gotten the independence he has been trying to get for over a hundred years. He wouldn't exactly be happy being under someone else's thumb.

This is what leads him to pursuing these sort of secret funding from Russia, both to feel more independent and to cut himself off from America a bit.

- Iceland knows he can criticize America and be difficult with him, but cannot do this with Russia. He has a much more tense friendship to Russia than he does america

- most of their meetings consist of discussing funding (often indirectly held over icelands head) or simply trying to make iceland ally himself to let more russian influence over his country

- iceland would only enjoy russias company in certain times due to him being more quiet, a big contrast to how loud America is

- The nordics are unaware of iceland having any connection to Russia at all, and are only made completely aware of it during icelands financial crisis, where the financial support ice receives from Russia makes the nordics a bit concerned for him
