Twenty Three. 23. What an age, most people would have been properly settled with a lover, be it a boyfriend or a husband. Most people would have a group of friends at their home or even out for dinner, singing with a fancy cake. Most people would be stable, but she wasn’t. Many people found their birthday as something big, but the nurse just treated it as a regular day, the hospital had learned that the hard way. They surprised her during her first year of working and she almost fell over from the screaming people. Of course, at the time she was thankful but after the small gathering she requested not to have it happen again. Instead, they gave her three days off every time her birthday came around, but she would be back when it was Christmas, per her request. Sull Hee always wondered why they made this day so special, even her grandmother made it so it was a ‘special day’. To her, it simply signifies the day she was born, which isn’t all that good, it just made her feel old (even though 23 isn’t very old).
The water bender woke up with the sound of her phone ringing and vibrating against her bedside table. With a groan she quickly grabbed the device, tapping the screen to answer. It was her boss, she called to remind her to have a ‘Happy birthday’. The message didn’t go under appreciated, she really did cherish those small gestures that her boss made. A sweet lady indeed. The nurse soon got up, it was almost noon, time for brunch. With that, she had cleaned herself up, making sure she was presentable for the public eye and headed towards the nearest cafe to grab herself a nice brunch. The nurse managed to finish her food within twenty minutes. A sigh escaped her lips as her eyes scanned the cafe, she was the only one alone. Sometimes, she really did hate being this way. Distant, cold and quiet. Sometimes, sometimes, “I wish someone was here to celebrate..”
The water bender stormed out of the cafe, her legs striding down the street towards her empty apartment. The streets were surprisingly open at this time of day, it was usually the busiest times. Marching up to her apartment she couldn’t help hut winder why she ended up being this way, being so antisocial. Sure, she had a few friends but she wasn’t very close like how she saw others in oublic. Never did she think much of it, but now that Sull Hee was alone with her thoughts, it hit her. Pathetic. She thought of herself.
“Happy birthday to me.”
