You make it sound as though there was no choice but to make Ludevic a simple commander with the Partner mechanic, or not have him at all. But couldn't he have just as easily been one of the 4-color commanders? That would have given a lot more design freedom, and i think he could even fit into UBRG colors nicely.

The four color commander had to built to make their deck work. That wouldn't have been a top down slot either.
