Phone Calls and Forged Adoptions
The phone rang three times before a voice answered.
"Hey, Babs, I got a favor to ask you." A snort came crackling from the other line.
"That's a great way to start a conversation, Jason." The sentence ringing with sarcastic laughter, the second leaving behind compassion. "What's up?" Jason sighed, running a hand through his hair and glancing at the little girl sitting on his couch, swinging her legs as she shoveled spoonful after spoonful of chocolate ice cream into her mouth.
"I got a kid here, can't find any info on her, she said her parents told her to wait at Robinson Park and never came back, and that she'd been there for four days. Said her name's Millie, and that she's six. I need you to find anything you can on her, and her parents." Barbara responded with quick agreement and all that was heard on her end of the phone for almost half a minute was typing and clicking. Finally, her voice spoke up.
"Carmilla Scott. Her parents, Karen and Jacob committed a double suicide three days ago, probably after they left her at the park. No other relations, except an uncle serving a life sentence in jail, there's barely any record of her, seems like her parents were really trying to hide her."
"Fuck."
"Want me to see if any nearby and decent orphanages have any space?"
"No. But if you could forge some adoption papers, that'd be great." He said, looking down when there was a tug on his pant leg. There, he found the small girl, face covered in chocolate, looking up at him, holding out the empty bowl. Her name was fitting, for she was as dainty and pale as the original Carmilla, with hair and eyes just as dark. Looking at her, he already felt like she was family, and not being able to say no to his soft spot when it came to kids, and her very talented puppy dog eyes, he took the bowl from her hands, gave her a smile, and refilled the bowl, handing it back to her, and wiping her face off with a napkin. "Oh, and try and keep this a secret from Bruce, and anyone who might tell him."
"Sure, but why forge the adoption papers? You're not still legally dead, right?" She asked, her skeptics only confirmed when she heard his drawn-out noncommittal mumble. "Seriously, Jason? Why?"
"It's convenient, alright?" He said, laughing at the half-annoyed 'Oh My God.' That came from her end of the call. "Well, I gotta go work on finding her some pajamas for the night before I take her shopping tomorrow, so we'll talk later. Thanks for the help, Babs."
"Sure thing. I'll come over tomorrow to help with the shopping."
"What? You don't think I'm capable of picking out some clothes and furniture?" He heard her scoff.
"Hey, Dick's having too much time living up to his name to give me a baby, so I'm gonna be the best almost-aunt and get to pamper yours, got it?"
"Haha, fine, alright. I'll see you tomorrow at noon, okay?"
"Sounds good. Goodnight."
