A poem by Rachael Allen
The Slim Man
A landscape unpainted: a cold stream of lean black weeds leading towards a stile and a field tilting up. Trees turn to veins against marbly sky in the half hour before night.
During a certain moon children are said to have seen a slim man walking over the field in a low mist, towards the stile, leading a girl in pale blue pinstripes into the glowing pinstripe forest beyond.
Sometimes he will stop and lean down, and scrape the earth, then earth and touch are knotted for they are both cold. No one is scared of him, more of the thick dark brook, drowned roots and full night, the pitiful rabbits’ eyes yellow on the hillside.

‘A MUSEICALLY INCLINED’ Exclusive By: Mikey Adam Cohen & Sheryl Aronson
Palm Springs,CA (The Hollywood Times) 9/16/2015- It was a Monday evening, July 27th and the air temperature outside was 105 degrees at 7pm but the music being performed inside the venue, Hacienda Cantina and Beach Club smoked hotter than the Palm Spring’s night. Patte Purcell’s Palm Spring’s Summer Jazzfestival featured Slim Man, Joe Baldino, Deanna Bogart, Chase Huna and Greg Adam’s East Bay Soul. The crowd inside the Hacienda Beach Club jived and danced to the scorching sounds of these musicians plus enjoyed the delicious food the restaurant offered.
The intimate setting provided just the right atmosphere Patte Purcell wanted to create for her “jazz party” as she called it. She told Mikey & Sheryl’s Museically Inclined, “I do my gig on Monday nights because nobody is booked that evening. It’s an opportunity to hire bands I can’t get on other nights. I do parties, not concerts, so everyone is out of their seats dancing and having a good time. I want the band and the guests on the same level.”
For three hours the Hacienda Cantina and Beach Club rocked and rolled as the three bands delighted the crowd from the front room to the back bar. Each band delivered their unique flavor of contemporary jazz from Slim Man’s sophisticated sensual singing to Joe Baldino’s smoldering guitar playing highlighted by the supersonic sounds of Deanna Bogart and Chase Huna’s saxes, to the finale performance of the funky grooving band, Greg Adams and East Bay Soul.
Patte commented on her line-up. “Slim Man is awesome,” “I’ve been working with him for the past five years and he always gives a great performance. Joe Baldino and Deanna Bogart have brilliant qualities. They have a great chemistry and are super passionate and committed to the music. Chase is so amazing at 16 and plays like he’s been doing it forever. Finally, I wanted to get Greg Adams and East Bay Soul’s music out to more people because not everyone knows about them and Greg Adam’s group is one of the best around. Greg is a founding member of Tower of Power.”
High points of the evening were: Deanna Bogart and Chase Huna stood on two of the booth’s seats, side by side in the front part of the venue to introduce their wild blowing of saxes. Her shiny long brown hair hung over her face as she bent forward screeching on her horn and next to her Chase stood tall dressed in his hip black emblem blazer howling matching riffs. One can’t help but notice his flaming red hair on top of his head, blazing too. They make quite a pair.
Chase Huna played at the Newport Jazz Festival this past May and electrified the crowd with his sophisticated scorching horn playing. He’s only sixteen but he has a very mature outlook on the music business. He told ‘Museically Inclined’ in an interview at the festival, “I want to do this for the rest of my life. I’ve been listening to jazz since I was 2 years old. You need to start early if you want to become famous in this industry.”
Joe Baldino and Deanna Bogart dressed in coordinating black and white outfits, (they claim they didn’t plan their outfits) sweetly played together as Deanna leaned into Joe sharing harmonies back and forth from guitar to sax. The song ‘Mama Mia’ enlisted images of the streets of an Italian section of a city where one can smell the home cooked food wafting out the houses of the city streets and women are hanging out the windows calling to each other. As the music spiced up I could smell all the delicious aromas intermingling as the afternoon slowly leaves and the evening celebrations of the people heat up with drinking wine, dancing and twirling to the rhythms of the night. Joe Baldino has himself a hit here with Mama Mia.(Joe will be recording his new CD produced by Brian Bromberg with special guests including Rick Braun, Michael Paulo and more). The Deanna Bogart band is the perfect blend of Blues, R&B, Boogie Piano & Sax. The ever-entertaining Slim Man giving ‘Museically Inclined’ his usual off the cuff remarks when we interviewed him. He told ‘Museically Inclined’ how he got his start in the music business “I studied trumpet for 9 years, and also taught myself how to play piano and guitar. After studying classical piano, composition and harmony at Peabody Institute of Music in Baltimore, MD, I got signed as a songwriter for Motown Records. Next thing you know I was a stud and I had songs recorded by the Temptations, Angela Bofill, and other artists. Then I got to record a CD for Motown, which gave birth to my signature style–a unique blend of jazz, soul and pop.” He’s actually writing a cookbook, as well as working on a new CD with the help of his friend Marc Antoine. We did hear Slim Man’s serious side too in which he talked more about his journey as an artist and what he’s currently creating now in the studio with Marc Antoine. “Right now I’m working with Marc Antoine in his home studio. As he produced,my latest release entitled Bonafide, with Innervision Records for me, It’s such a pleasure to working with him again.”
Listening to Greg Adams and East Bay Soul’s always funky, classy arrangements executed by some of the finest musicians in the contemporary jazz scene is such a treat. Their newest CD, ‘That’s Life’ which I reviewed when it first came out in April, http://thehollywoodtimes.net/2015/04/15/ksbrs-saturday-morning-show/ is chock full of hit songs. They played many of them like Little Black Dress, You Got Me Going in Circles, Come Together…this scaled down version of the larger, East Bay Soul group really blended well for this show. They had classic Tower Of Power signature dancing moves, and the right mix of vocals, horns, and percussion to wow the crowd. Darryl Walker’s earthy smooth voice charmed all the women and a few men in this super well attended event, The super orchestrated horns section consisting of Greg Vail, Greg Adams and Lee Thornburg sounding like an entire symphony playing their new sensational CD, entitled, “THAT’S LIFE”. A collection of eleven songs that fuses the band’s love for vintage soul music, pop, with powerful horns and gorgeous orchestration East Bay Soul topped the festival or “jazz party” as event, producer, Patte Purcell referred to it. Thanks to Tesla for sponsoring this fun event, it was fun to see many of the guests test drive these fabulous cars. The party included ‘A list’ jazz professionals and celebrities, from Art Good of the famous Catalina Jazz Festival, Ruth Ruiz, event producer & booking agent, Carl Davis & Candace, dance pro’s, Jennifer Ricker, Personal Stylist to the stars, Michael Kross, Video producer/editor/audio engineer, Tom Huna, promotional product pro and manager of Sax Star, Chase Huna,Peyton Huna, photographer, Even A Friends of ours from Arizona, Theresa Guerrero came by to celebrate her birthday with us.
