Slipping Through My Fingers - ABBA (Alyona)
This is Abba’s eighth and final studio album and, although not as commercially successful as their preceding ones, it really is very good. There’s no Dancing Queen or Winner Takes it All on here, but that’s okay because they’d already written those perfect pop songs. What we do have is a little darker, a bit of early 80s experimental pop electronica, and a signpost to the creative direction that Andersson and Ulvaeus were heading. The opening track, The Visitors, featuring Frida on lead vocals is a mysterious atmospheric evocation of the Cold War era, and a (mild) protest at the Soviet Union’s treatment of dissidents. It’s my favourite track on the album and a far cry from Mamma Mia. The politics on this album are both geopolitical and personal with both couples having divorced by the time it was released. The cover photo featuring them all lurking separately in the shadows of a high-ceiled room speaks volumes in terms of their emotional state. But it’s there in the songs too: When All Is Said And Done and One Of Us are explicit in their own personal sadness. The latter still made it to number one however, their last. Though the former is the more heart-wrenching – Abba do good breakup songs. The closing track, Like An Angel Passing Through My Room, also features Frida on vocals, and is as unusual as the opening track for a ‘pop’ album. It’s almost like a lament-cum-lullaby, and really rather beautiful. Abba were/are one of the most popular and successful pop groups of all time. And this album, by no means their actual final curtain – Abbamania has been back big-time since the early 90s – is a worthy bow out before they exited stage right. "What happened to those adventures? The places I have planned for us to go. Well, some of them we did,but most we didn't and why I just don't know..."

Day 21 - #30daymusicchallenge "Song that breaks my heart" Maybe I'm the odd one, all music touches my heart in some way. But two stand out. @jamesmichaelofficial and #SayItOnceMore from his solo album, #Inhale The lyrics, the music, the voice. First time heard it, tears. A very close second, #SlippingThroughMyFingers by #Abba (performed by @melissakharding ). This one, all the lyrics. As my daughters get older, the more tears fall. (Links to both videos in my bio. "Slipping through my fingers all the time I try to capture every minute The feeling in it Slipping through my fingers all the time Do I really see what's in her mind Each time I think I'm close to knowing She keeps on growing Slipping through my fingers all the time."
