Kyaaaaa!

I did it!

Today, I had my exam and I passed! This means that I have become an official apprentice. A minarai.

Minarai means a person who learns by observation. I will start to slowly look the part, but not fully participate. I'll be able to focus on how my mentors work and learn from it.

I have a busy day in the afternoon. I will receive my professional name. All of the women at Umeno have names that start with Ume. Ume means plum blossom. It can be an auspicious motif. Ume blossoms are highly seasonal in February where they hark the start of the spring season.

After I get my name, Okaahan will take me to have my hair done into wareshinobu. Wareshinobu is a traditional style that only particularly qualified hairdressers can fix. I can decorate it with shibori cloth and simple pins while I'm not working. I will have to sleep on a special pillow to keep from messing it up.

Later that evening, I will participate in my first ozashiki. It won't mark the official start of my career. It's more like, orientation, or shadowing, if you will.

Just a couple of snapshots taken of Geiko Umehina during our final dress rehearsal, last Saturday. If you’re interested in attending the performance, I believe I posted a flier for it not too long ago. Unfortunately, due to technical issues, we’ve lost one of our main acts. I’m a bit saddened by it, but I’m still looking forward to the show very much. Especially with lessons and parties on hold for the holiday season.

Mizuekai 2020 presents: Sagi Musume A sad tale of a love of a woman betrayed featuring Onnagata Kunisaki Izumo of Ume no Ki Dance School. Kagai: Miyagawacho and Kamishichiken. Saturday, December 26th - 5pm SLT (PST) at the Kyoto-shi Theatre. Tickets are free - Donations are welcome. Produced by Ume no Ki Dance School’s choreographer, Umecha. Every year, the Miyagawacho geisha district (both in real life, and in Second Life) run their annual Mizuekai Odori. There will be several performances put on for your viewing pleasure at no cost to you.

I’ve been quite busy, as usual. But thank you for stopping to read. If you haven’t visited before, my name is Kisaragi-san. I am a trainee of Umeno Okiya at Kyoto-shi sim in Second Life. (Pictured above from left to right: Geiko Umecha and her new shikomi: Hanako, Kisaragi, Kane, and Suki).

I’ve been getting to know my sisters pretty well. We have our ups and downs, but for the most part, things are smooth. We’ve been doing a lot of studying. In particular, the lessons are over Kitsuke (wearing kimono), Nihongami (Japanese hair styles), (Oshiroi) make-up, Kenkyo (manners), Kata (Movement/Ways of doing things), Nihonbuyo (Japanese Dance), and Chadou (Tea).

There’s only 2 geikosan in our Okiya. Okaasan Umecha and Umehina neesan. Umesana neesan is the third ranking person, but she is just a Minarai, so there are currently no maikosan in the okiya. After Umesana neesan is myself. I am the highest ranking shikomi of the okiya. It doesn’t mean much right now. A shikomisan is still just a shikomisan. Think of us as beginners, or even attendants. I think the newer enrollees still look up to me. I am happy to help as best as I can. One day, maybe one of them will be my imouto! All geisha have oneesan (older sisters) and imouto (younger sisters) who are tied to them for their entire career, maybe even their whole life. It’s always an exciting concept that even observers are curious about.

We had our first formal performance on the sim. It was a bit of trouble, truth be told. But, it still turned out well. Everyone had the opportunity to dress formally and play as musicians, or dressed formally for stage performance to support the show. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a lot of advertisement regarding the event and the event itself almost didn’t happen due to some real life (RL) issues between individuals. I was mostly looking forward to a particular performance that couldn’t come to be. But even still, just having it happen was a good experience. Here is a photo of myself playing that evening (see above).

Being a part of the show really filled me with the desire to work harder. So much so, that I was able to successfully learn my first dance! I’m so happy! I am now able to dance Kyo no Shiki (4 seasons). Well, I can dance the first half of it, anyway. I’m beyond ecstatic. Someday, I will learn the second half of the dance which is reserved for higher ranking geiko. (Picture taken inside of the Utsukushii Hana Geisha School’s secondary dance studio).
