Mahiru and Kuro raced from shop to shop in a hurry. Well, Mahiru did all the running, since Kuro was jogging at most. It was a pain that his Eve had to shop for more items for school. This happened often since Mahiru had a terribly annoying habit of deciding to help with everything that no one else would do. This had meant that at the ungodly hour of 7:00pm, where Kuro was supposed to be napping, they had to run in a hurry before the stores closed. If Kuro remembered correctly, Mahiru needed a variety of things, from food ingredients to fabrics. Unfortunately, in the ingredients needed, there were no potato chips or cola. Naturally, this annoyed the Servamp a little. The Sloth Pair had more spare time now that Tsubaki had quietened down and gone missing, so all Kuro really wanted to do was laze around.
Oh, and there was one small detail that the Servamp had forgotten.
It was typhoon season.
They had been lucky so far, and there was not a single cloud in the sky.
But as soon as they finished gathering all the things that Mahiru had needed and left the shop- It all began.
The clouds were black and stormy like shadows, and thunder rumbled like a lion’s roar. Mahiru froze and stared at the sky, realising, that he did not have an umbrella. Nor did Kuro, who at least, had his hoodie. However, the hoodie wasn’t the best to wear in rainy weather. The water soaked into it like a sponge and made the clothing heavy and uncomfortable.
And the first droplet of rain fell.
Instantaneously, millions of raindrops fell like an army rushing in to fight its enemy. Large bubbles of water crashed down on the Sloth Pair’s heads, like a bucket of water had been tipped on them. Mahiru was soaked in the first few seconds of the downpour, and it wouldn’t take long before Kuro’s coat became waterlogged too. After the two had got over the initial shock of the rain starting, they rushed towards a shop overhang and were safe from the storm. Excluding the bigger raindrops that splashed back at their shins.
“I told you we shouldn’t have gone out…” Kuro complained, trying to squeeze some of the water out from his coat tails. Mahiru felt a small twinge of anger towards the Servamp but rolled his eyes instead. He couldn’t help it if it was simpler to take on the jobs no one else wanted to do. But, Kuro did have a point. He knew that a typhoon was going to happen at some point, and it didn’t help that the shops were going to close soon anyway. This meant that Mahiru didn’t even get everything he needed. So, he did feel a little guilty.
“Thinking simply, we have to find a way to get back home without getting completely soaked. So, any ideas, Kuro?” The young Eve questioned his Servamp, who shrugged before asking,
“Aren’t we already soaked?” At this comment, Mahiru blinked and inspected his clothes. They had already caused a puddle at his feet. Immediately, the brunette burst into laughter. His cheery mood seemed to take away all the darkness and blew away the storm. Kuro felt the corner of his mouth twitch. He wanted to smile too. He wanted to try and be as optimistic as his Eve. It was a strange feeling. Kuro’s cheeks felt warm for some reason, and slowly, the Servamp raised his hand to feel his burning face. The warmth surprised him and he withdrew his hand quickly as if nothing had happened. Was he getting a fever? He never got ill, so he doubted it. If not, it was probably because of the cold surroundings.
But the lazy Servamp knew.
These were probably all just excuses.
“Though, I don’t think you’re that bad. Your coat took most of the damage…” Mahiru commented, walking over to prod at the sleeve of Kuro’s coat- and waterlogged as it was- a stream of water came out as soon as it was prodded. For the past few minutes, Kuro could feel the icy water soaking through his coat onto his clothing below. It was anything less than comfortable. It felt like snakes made of ice were squirming all over his body. He shivered slightly, hoping Mahiru wouldn’t notice. But, naturally, the motherly brunette noticed,
“Kuro? Are you cold? We should hurry and get home, and yet I forgot the umbrella… Ah, what should we do?!” Mahiru started to fret to himself, pacing a little in the store’s entrance.
“It’s fine… We’ll just have to run back- Well, you will, since I’ll be a cat stowed in one of the shopping bags…”
“No! You’re running too, I’m not going to be the only one getting soaked!” Mahiru scowled, flicking Kuro in the forehead.
“I thought we already said that we’re both drenched anyway?” The Servamp replied, averting his eyes slightly as Mahiru burst into laughter again. What was with him today? Maybe he really was ill… But, the Servamps rarely got ill, so how could Kuro be sick? More importantly, they had to find a way to get through the storm. The blue-haired Servamp did have one idea. But, he was tentative about it. However, since it was the only idea that he could think of…
With a mutter of his catchphrase, “What a pain”, he started to take off his heavy coat. Mahiru watched silently, waiting for his Servamp to explain. Once it was off, Kuro tried to get as much water out of it as possible, though it didn’t really work.
“We could huddle under this, I guess?” He suggested, scratching his face and averting his eyes again awkwardly. Mahiru’s eyes lit up at the idea, whilst Kuro couldn’t help but feel nervous. Sure, the coat was pretty big and all, but to fit two people under it… They’d have to be pretty close.
“Good idea, Kuro!” Awkwardly, Kuro spread out the coat and then held it above his head, waiting for Mahiru to get under it. However, something happened that Kuro didn’t expect.
The brunette took his side of the coat and supported it with one arm. It looked kind of weird since he was holding shopping bags in that hand. This wasn’t important, though.
In order to get closer, and completely under the coat, Mahiru awkwardly snaked his arm around Kuro’s waist.
As soon as this happened, a spark of lightning shot down Kuro’s spine, and he nearly straightened up in surprise. Heat blazed through the spot where Mahiru touched him and reached the lazy Servamp’s face. Unable to really comprehend what was happening, before he knew it, the Sloth pair were running through the rain. The coat was gradually getting heavier, but Kuro barely noticed. As they ran, the blue-haired Servamp had been watching his Eve from the corner of his eye. Even though it was raining, and some water was still splashing the two, Mahiru was laughing. The brunette’s eyes were bright and happy; his smile wide. The blush on the Servamp’s cheeks gradually grew in colour, and Kuro tried to stop staring at his amazing Eve.
But, he simply couldn’t.
Something was tickling Kuro’s insides. Like butterfly wings were lightly tickling his stomach. Then a thought occurred to the Servamp. Something that shocked him to the core.
He wanted to be with his Eve. Not as a partner, but as something more. He wanted- No, he needed… He needed to feel the softness of Mahiru’s lips against his own. The urge was almost uncontrollable.
Everything that happened so far, had been so troublesome and annoying. Yet, Kuro had found it endearing. The brunette was someone he treasured so dearly. The Servamp had no idea that entering a contract with this cheerful teenager would result in something that would be such a pain.
It was a word that Kuro didn’t want to say.
But, he knew what the emotion was now.
Without explanation, the Servamp stopped running and went back into a walk. Mahiru nearly ran away, not expecting Kuro to stop in such heavy rain.
“Kuro, what’s wrong?” The Eve asked in a worried voice that warmed Kuro’s heart even more. The hand was still there. Still at Kuro’s waist. Mahiru still wouldn’t let go.
The Servamp half wished that his Eve would let go.
Let go, Mahiru.
Before Kuro did something he would probably regret.
“Kuro?” Mahiru repeated nervously, not caring that the rain was reaching them now. The Servamp bit his lip, tasting a coppery liquid. Ah, he’d drawn blood. Was he really that tense? Just how much had this boy changed him?
Just how much did Mahiru mean to him?
Mechanically, Kuro turned to face Mahiru. He felt as if he had lost all control of his actions. Before he did anything, he murmured in a voice that was barely a breath,
“What a pain…”
Their lips touched.
It was but a quick kiss, however, it still made both of them feel something that they couldn’t name. Kuro was slightly surprised at how the Eve had replied, moving his lips in return to the Servamp’s, but in under a minute, it was over.
Kuro turned away averting his eyes and itching behind his ear, not really knowing what to do. He was already starting to feel the all too familiar feeling of regret poisoning him. Mahiru had also turned away, and the feeling of regret sunk like a heavyweight in the Servamp’s stomach. And, yet, the boy had returned the kiss… Was Mahiru too shocked, and replied naturally? Doubt, worry, confusion, regret and anger directed at himself filled Kuro’s mind, and he glared at the ground. He’d rather do anything than see Mahiru’s reaction.
But from the corner of his eye, he saw it… The brunette’s cheeks were flushed a light red.
However, before Kuro could start debating what this even meant…
All the water from the coat finally gave in and started to soak through- in a torrent. The two jumped apart quickly in surprise, dropping the weighted coat. There was a silence, where the only sound was the rain, thunder and occasional crack of lightning. The Servamp’s mind was blank; too confused at his own feelings to register that he was getting drenched by the storm. Mahiru was the first to snap out of it as he noticed that they had been standing in the downpour unprotected for more than five minutes.
“Ah! Kuro, we have to hurry, or we’ll get ill!” The Eve shouted over a rumble of thunder, grabbing the Servamp’s hand. Kuro barely had time to retrieve his hoodie, before Mahiru dragged him along. At first, they were walking, but soon it turned into a full-on sprint through the streets. Embarrassingly, the Servamp tripped over his own feet multiple times. Probably because he rarely ran- Or, was it more the fact that all he could look at was his and Mahiru’s intertwined hands?
Together they sprinted through the storm, and before long reached Mahiru’s apartment. Thankfully, Hyde and Licht weren’t staying with them that night, and it was deadly quiet. Mahiru turned on the lights and hurried to get them towels. Kuro took off of his boots, abandoned his hoodie, and headed towards the sofa.
“No! You’ll get the sofa wet!” Mahiru scolded Kuro, tossing a towel on the blue-haired Servamp’s head. He turned to stare at Mahiru with the towel covering half his face. Then something happened again, that surprised the both of them for the 3rd time that night.
Kuro sneezed.
Mahiru stared at Kuro in horror, before sneezing himself.
This time, Kuro stared at Mahiru in shock, seeing that his Eve never got ill.
Slowly, the brunette reached out to touch Kuro’s forehead, feeling that it was extremely hot,
“...We both got ill… Which is normal for me, but thinking simply, since when did vampires get ill?!” Mahiru started to worry and began checking all sorts of things, even going as far as to gather painkillers in case. Kuro watched the human run about in a hurry as if the Servamp would die if he didn’t get immediate attention. A dry chuckle erupted from the blue-haired vampire’s mouth, much to the surprise of the pair.
“Kuro?!” Mahiru gasped in shock, as the Servamp finished his small laugh, “You must be ill?! Since when did you-” The brunette’s mouth was open and his face slightly reddened, though Kuro imagined that it was probably due to the cold.
“Mahiru, why are you worrying about me… You’re the one that’s human and has a cold. It’s not like I’m going to die. Stop overdramatizing everything, Mum.” The Servamp teased, though the effect was ruined by him sneezing, again.
“That’s it, Kuro, go take a shower. Then I’ll go after you and we’ll get some sleep.” Mahiru ordered, pushing the Servamp towards the bathroom.
After the two had showered and gotten into their pyjamas, Mahiru retreated to his room, whilst Kuro went to the sofa. The cold had started to affect the Servamp, and since he hadn’t had one in forever, it was weird. His nose was stuffy and his mind foggy, it would probably be impossible to sleep. It hadn’t been two minutes when Mahiru suddenly returned. His face was hidden in the darkness of the night, but Kuro heard what he said clearly,
“K-Kuro… The sofa isn’t the most comfortable thing to sleep when you’re ill, so thinking simply, you should…” The brunette gulped, unable to finish his sentence. But Kuro understood.
“Can’t deal…” He murmured, getting up and following his Eve into his room.
The emotion that Kuro had been feeling earlier had returned and this time…
Both of the Sloth Pair could feel it.
Mahiru’s bedroom door swung shut.
