These are songs you swear you’ve heard before, even on first listen. Slow Leaves’ 2014 record Beauty Is So Common purposefully draws back to classic pop and rock modes, a songwriter record enhanced with an alt country coating throughout. His voice is the driving instrument, a rich, storied instrument, especially for a debut. His melodic choices seem studied, in a good way, really knowing how to work each word into the flow of his songs. Slow Leaves mostly stays in mid-tempo, country-rock form, grooves that feel of California drives and the stories the come before and after. Imaginably Slow Leaves is working on some new tunes since its been a few years since his last and only release - lookout for those tracks to be highlighted next month at SXSW.
