A lot of people have been asking online what's up with Sean Lock lately. I know he had skin cancer in the past, but do you know what's going on with him now? I hope he's okay.
hey there, so i too have noticed so many people seem suddenly very concerned for him. i know his voice was croaky in the last episode(s) of catsdown, which is why people seem to be asking questions — or, often, jumping to conclusions — as to how he’s doing
it’s important to remember that cats does countdown is often (not always) filmed far, far in advance of airing; i recall one episode when a guest asked jon how old his daughter was and he said 3 months, which, knowing when she was born, meant the episode aired over 5 months after it was recorded. as well, sean has made public appearances in the last few months (here, for example), performed at the ealing comedy festival this week, and will perform at camp bestival this weekend
that said… you are correct that he did experience a bout of skin cancer when he was in his 20s. while it is not out of the question, it is not likely a long-term malcondition he may be suffering is skin cancer, because he will be receiving bi-annual skin cancer screenings for life, and even melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is almost always curable. (can you tell i have some personal experience with this? heh…) last year he did cancel a massive gig scheduled for april 2017 due to “unforeseen circumstances” that were never expounded upon. the end of 2016 and onwards is when catsdown starts seeing much less of sean, and the episode that aired 6 july 2017 debuted his “balkan war criminal” look a.k.a. a shaved head, which he did not maintain. series 14, which aired in the autumn of 2017, only had one episode with sean
i do not want to trivialise any experience(s) he may be having, but i also don’t want to speculate. my personal opinion is that 1) if something was seriously wrong with sean, it was likely in the last 1—2 years whilst he’s been out of the spotlight, and 2) if he is currently on our screens and at festivals, he is okay, at least for right now.
