Slow your scroll and take a swim with Stygiomedusa.

The giant phantom jelly, Stygiomedusa gigantea, was first collected in 1899. Since then, scientists have only encountered this animal about 100 times. It appears to have a worldwide distribution and has been recorded in all ocean basins except for the Arctic. The challenges of accessing its deep-water habitat contribute to the relative scarcity of sightings for such a large and broadly distributed species. Learn more on our website.

This extraordinary deep-sea resident is Avocettina bowersii, also known as a snipe eel. The snipe eels in the family Nemichthyidae have thin, tweezer-like jaws that bend outwards. It was long debated how these fishes eat, but we now know that their tiny, backward-facing teeth, almost like velcro, allow them to capture small crustaceans and bring the prey into their mouths with a series of quick chomps. ⁠⁠ 

Snipe eels can be found at depths between 92 and 641 meters (300 and 2,100 feet) and measure about one to two meters (three to five feet) in length.

⁠Gonatus onyx, or the black-eyed squid, is one of the most common squids we see in the deep midwater. These squid grow rapidly, are active swimmers, and have among the highest metabolism of all cephalopods (octopus, squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus). We often observe this species of squid eating something else (viperfish, lanternfish, OTHER SQUIDS). ⁠

The black-eyed squid is an active predator, searching through the water column to capture a fish or shrimp. When the squid finds its target, it shoots out two long feeding tentacles, each tipped with suckers and claw-like hooks to snag their prey. Once captured, the squid reels in the fish and grabs it securely with its eight arms. It then uses its sharp beak to sever the fish’s spinal cord, rendering it helpless, and begin to devour its substantial meal.
