Jan 16, 2018 - East Chop dock one day during the unusual long stretch of bitter cold that started right after Christmas. It was about 8F out, with a strong wind, when I took this pic on Jan 6, 2018. It was so cold that the waves coming in to shore were thick and slushy.

The FROZEN/SLURPEE Waves Of Nantucket
They call them slush waves or slurpee waves because this is what you get when waves are semi-frozen in frigid temperatures, that is, when ice forms just on the top layers of the ocean in shallow waters but not deep within the ocean itself. The waves contain bits of ice creating this unusual but awesome effect resembling a slush or slurpee.
