Petna: Capturing their Story
So I have a story to tell all of you. A beautiful romance that bloomed from the amazing technology that sits in front of you as you read this. Per usual with my busy schedule, I was running a little late to catch my flight to Australia. Airports are always busy, and every time I book a flight I tell myself to be early so I don't have to worry about missing the flight, but I always end up making it by the skin of my teeth.
Anyways, this story isn't about how I was late to my flight.
I had been pushing past person after person, trying to make it to Terminal C when I saw a woman staring intently at the incoming flight board. She had beautiful blonde hair that was extremely frizzy that framed her face, but it suited her, giving her a look of innocence that you normally don't see. Her stare was intense, and her foot was tapping quickly on the ground as she often checked the watch that hung on her wrist and the phone in her hand.
I quickly un-clasped the cover on my lens and captured a quick photo of the woman and was about to continue moving when her face broke out into a bright smile. When I say bright, I mean the brightest smile you can think of. Ear to ear, her grin stretched and she took off towards the line of people exiting from Terminal B. I watched her progress as she stood as close as she could, bouncing from foot to foot, trying to see over the other passenger's heads.
I stood silently watching, a small feeling tugging at my gut to just let it unfold. The woman's face was starting to fall and a small sadness was clear as the crowd thinned and less people were leaving from the terminal. She pulled out her phone and was looking at it intently- my guess was to re-read a text from whomever she was waiting for. As she stared at her phone, a tall man with messy brown hair exited the terminal, a small bag thrown over his shoulder as he scanned the area, eyes seeking a certain someone. She glanced up from her phone to see the man and it was like a little girl getting a present she's wanted for months.
"Peter!" She screamed, dropping her phone and running towards the man who turned towards her with incredible speed. His face also broke out into a large grin and he opened his arms and she launched herself into them. He held her tightly and spun her around once before setting her down and holding her close.
I moved quickly to the woman's phone and scooped it up before it could get stolen or stepped on. I looked up to see them in a tight embrace and a long, simple kiss. I took a few photos of the two as small tears gathered in the corner of my eye. After all was finished, I walked up to the pair.
"Excuse me, miss." I said, and the pair turned towards me with curious stares. "This is your phone. I-I had been watching you and seen you drop it."
The man's eyes turned hard and he pulled the woman closer before snatching the phone out of my outstretched hand. "Thank you for returning her phone." He snarled, with a heavy accent.
I held up my hands in defeat and backed up a step. "Whoa, whoa. I didn't mean it like that!" I laughed and pointed to my camera. "I'm a photographer. I seen her staring at the arrival board- waiting for you, I'd guess and I felt like I should stay and watch. I'm very glad I did, too. Would you like to see the pictures I took?"
The woman was eager to see the photos and the man's - Peter- face softened and he agreed. We all moved over to the waiting area and I showed them the pictures and they shared their story.
Leena and Peter had met over Tumblr 6 years ago, and began playing the game Minecraft and skyping together with friends. They started dating a few weeks in and had been talking of meeting ever since. With Peter living in the Netherlands and Leena in Canada, the time schedules were very different, but they still found time to share private moments full of love and happiness.
I'm very happy to have met the two at the airport three years ago. Today, I stand in front of a large group of people to share this amazing story at the pair's wedding, which amazes me. Leena is wearing a beautiful dress and Peter couldn't look prouder than he does now as he holds his wife's hand and gives her quick kisses to the cheek and forehead. Love can bloom anywhere, and usually in the most unexpected places, just as it has for these two.
