Makoto & Femininity in Ep 96
Disclaimer: I am using American culture as my frame of reference in this interpretation so take this bias into account.
In episode 96 of Sailor Moon, Makoto Kino really gets to meet Haruka Tenoh for the first time, and she is almost immediately taken with the woman. She’s seen her before, but the only thing she really knows about her was that Minako mistook Haruka for a cute boy, and Haruka’s response to this was to simply say that she never said she was a boy, and that was that(!), beyond some minor awkwardness.
So by the time Mako has a chance to really be face to face with the woman, all she really thinks of her as is this boyish girl: something Mako feels she is herself.
Mako: I figured that a big boyish girl like me should at least know how to cook.
Before Mako encounters Haruka in ep 96, Usagi praises her for her cooking, and this is Mako’s response. You can see on her face that this thought process has some negative connotations. She’s admitting to taking proactive steps to combat her perceived boyishness, which is one of the only things she probably associates with Haruka at this point.
Usagi: Even if you couldn’t cook, you’re still very feminine, Mako. Mako: Thank you
Usagi cuts right to the issue. Even if not super consciously, she recognizes that Mako is admitting to feeling off about her presentation of her gender, and Usagi immediately moves to the heart of the issue to reassure Mako, and look how much it means to Mako to hear Usagi say this. I mean, one could perceive that look to be in part indulgent in her kind-hearted friend, but I think that’s only a part. This was something Mako needed to hear.
Now, to get it out of the way, I want to address the reasons Mako feels boyish: she’s tall, strong, and interested in masculine-coded activities (notably martial arts).
So when she runs into Haruka again, with her mind explicitly in this place, she’s reminded of Haruka’s boyishness. Haruka is also tall, she was literally mistaken for a boy, and they run into each other literally because Haruka was driving a motorcycle. These are all things Mako could easily associate with boyishness.
But immediately upon Haurka interacting with them, she displays feminine traits. So I think two things are happening simultaneously here. Mako is remembering her first encounter with this woman, who shrugged off being mistaken as a man. It didn’t end up meaning Haruka was any less of a woman or any less solid in her identity. The other thing that is happening is Mako seeing feminine traits being displayed by Haruka: the feminine bow tied around her neck, her immediate outward display of concern, her administering care, and finally the very fancy/feminine tying of the scarf into a bow around Mako’s hand, which I joked she learned from Michiru.
Haruka; I’m so sorry Mako: It’s okay... it’s just a scratch
While I still firmly believe that Mako is indeed crushing on Haruka, I think her reaction to her is even deeper than a crush. She envies and admires Haruka’s ability to be so masculine without any concern over it. Haruka seems confident, sure of herself—cool—all while also displaying femininity even if in subtle ways. Also... she’s more boyish than Mako herself, which also helps Mako feel even more feminine in contrast. Mostly though, I think she admires Haruka for being o.k. with herself, boyishness and all.

The fact that at the beginning of the episode, Makoto gets hurt and Haruka ties the scarf onto Haruka and then it ends in the reverse, feels very much to me a confirmation to my belief that Haruka does crush Makoto right back in this episode, just not as obviously. There are various things this parallel is doing. Mako is reclaiming herself at the end here when she was doubting herself at the beginning. She was passive while Haruka took care of her, and now she is the one acting at the end with Haruka as the passive recipient. She blushes, but it’s a very different kind of blush than the one at the beginning imo.
And look at how surprised Haruka is, how tenderly she responds to Makoto.
And whatever uncertainty I have is always just crushed by the way Michiru looks on at all this. I’m not sure if I think she’s the type who just doesn’t feel threatened or if she’s the type who would let things happen (if Haruka doesn’t come around to wanting her, then she’d have to live with it?), but she’s clearly seeing something in these interactions. I think mostly, she’s just glad nothing happened to break Haruka.
On top of everything else, I think it’s important here that in Minako’s episodes, it ends with a greater distance being created between the two characters. Mina is both embarrassed by her misgendering of Haruka but also stops expressing interest in her.
So the experience with Mako ends on a higher note in that Mako clearly accepts Haruka for who she is and still embraces her/like likes her. But the kicker is that Haruka now has an idea how far she’ll go on this path and is probably painfully aware of what she just put Mako through, not knowing that Mako was able to work through that trauma even in a small way moments before.
And it’s made all the more ironic later when they all discover each others’ identities, and it became obvious that Haruka and Michiru weren’t helpless victims of a monster attack. What an awkward moment.
Smooooth (。•̀ᴗ-)✧
Ha! I love that middle expression of Kaolinite’s. Haruka’s gonna take a bitch out! =P
This monster’s nipple is a giant, heart stealing star.
Sailor Moon... wtf? HA!
Makoto did end up seeing more than she’d planned!
I love that Mako glares down the monster when she hears it told to take her heart crystal. I love it! The eye being red thing is weird. I don’t remember that animation for other victims. The animation for this process is really well done imo. I think it really conveys well what the creators were trying to go for, which I imagine can be tough to do? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
