I imagine an AU in which Shin Mao screwed up harder on being a bad father losing Mao Mao, when he was going to train his sisters in the forest. The child was distracted by something and eventually lost himself among the deepest areas completely alone, everyone returned home without realizing the lack of their presence and when knew that they lacked, ya was too late. He was lost.
This happened after his sisters obtain their legendary weapons and he his sword Geraldine.
In his trying for return home, he founds a big monster, a spirit from the forests, who helps him to find a way to get out to a near town, don't without a strange "damn" that make him capable to control the shadows and the dark nature from all the places he goes.
In the path, he ended finding with a little BaoBao and staying him for more time, which when arrives the moment when Mao Mao loses his tail, the dog yes ended accompaning his owner until the end for a three stormy days, before the poor teen decides cut it, and it does.
He lived like a kid without-home in that town, during that time in there place he was a class of Robin Hood, stealing the gold from the rich and giving to the poor. When he comply the 16, he decides go out for a better life and try become a true heroe, this time not to feel proud his family, he did it for himself, 'cause he really want sincerely help the others.
Time goes by and they find each other with Badgerclops, the only difference in his encounter is in that Mao Mao wasn't exaggerating when he says that he saved the life of his future best friend. But, yes. Yes, he was a little depressed and tired in that moment when they meet cause a bunch of bandits/bounthunters? who confused him with someone of his family and they tried to kill him and Bao Bao.
And passed almost exactly the things happened in the first chapter, but Badgerclops don't make any mention about the Mao's family cause he didn't make any mention about them along the years they know, here is more reserved in the topic about them than that he is in the original series for that incident and the fact that he really don't remember much of them.
Here he is a little less exaggerate, the closets thing posible to like the original but a little more serious and grumpy. He has TEPT for the abandonment of his father and a big resentment and don't want speak anything thing related with them, is more quiet when it is about his family or his life before Pure Heart Valley and the meet of his new friends/new family. He is concerned that his father is a popular and legendary heroe but he don't like make braggings about that, and he knows that the most of his family despite be heroes they aren't good persons.
In the case of the Mao's family, they ended broken after the lost of Mao Mao.
His father and his other sister tried find him to order from Mother Mao, don't taking seriously that lost in a first, but when there weren't track about him in nowhere for more of a week, all they finally ended freaking out and repenting things.
His parents separated for the irresponsibility and neglect from Shin Mao to their sons (exclusively him), thing that caused his disappearance. Shin Mao accepted it, cause is the truth and he regrets so much that.
Until now Shin Mao and his sisters are trying to fix his mistakes with him and found him.
Mao Mao don't knows that. In Pure Heart Valley he arrive to the conclusion that he doesn't want have to any thing to see with them, he doesn't cuz' he is happy now. In that place Mao Mao did a new family and friends who really love him since the first, and don't want see behind again, he want let go his past and can continue. He knows that his father and sisters neglected him and they abandoned him in the forest, and he suffered to much for it, but also accepted it.
And is in peace now like the Sheriff's Pure Heart Valley with Badgerclops and his little cutie student Adorabat.
